Why students should still study abroad

November 2020

While the COVID-19 pandemic did cause major hindrances to plans of studying abroad, there hasn't been a significant change in the aspirations of students since they all realise the many benefits an education from abroad holds.

Many surveys conducted across the globe highlighted the fact that students remain optimistic about their future prospects and expect the pandemic to dial back soon.

While some students have deferred their plans for higher education, not many have decided to ignore it altogether. A prominent reason for this could be the absence of face-to-face learning, which students yearn for when studying abroad.

Here's why students should continue planning their education abroad:

  • As a student one should continue down the path of studying abroad since when the economy does come out of this dire state, there will exist a high competition for jobs. And the only way to ensure that you have an upper-hand is to up your skills and there is no better way to do this than by attaining education.
  • There exists a myriad nature of students and each one of them undergoes a varied thought process. Some think it is better to take a gap year and let the storm pass. However, this is a luxury that only a few can afford. Only those that have conducive activities lined up can really dabble into the option of taking a gap year.
  • On the other hand, some students may consider studying in their home country. However, with classes in your home country being conducted online as well, why would you want to miss the opportunity of seeping in the abroad experience when things go back to normal.
  • Another reason student's are deterring from studying abroad is the stay-back opportunities they might lose. However, major study abroad destinations such as Canada and Australia to name a few have assured their students that they still remain eligible for their post-study work rights.
  • While it is always easier to assume the dark side of the coin, some students are dismal over the fact that international boundaries cease from opening. It is important to remember that the primary focus right now remains the well-being of society. Thus, when the situation does normalize students will be able to travel to their study destinations. Take for instance Canada, which has opened its borders to international students subject to certain rules.
  • Earlier factors that motivated students to study abroad continue to remain in play. For instance, the specialized nature of the course structure coupled with the sheer options is something that a student may not find in their home country and are thus, motivated to study abroad.
  • Moreover, being out of your comfort zone in a foreign destination hones your skills and formulates your cultural lens which comes in handy when you immerse yourself in the career pool which has become increasingly globalized in nature.

Thus, while the situation may seem bleak currently, it is important to keep in mind the many benefits of studying abroad. Use this time wisely and start getting your applications in. And for help with your university applications, get in touch with Edwise today.
