Visa Updates for Study in UK

November 2020

As one of the most popular study abroad destinations, UK has continued to be one of the most preferred destinations for international students. In an attempt to ensure the process is as seamless as possible for its students the new visa route was brought in.

The immigration route for students was altered by the British government on 5th Oct'2020. The Tier 4 route is now being called the Student Route.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought along with it its own set of problems, however, to streamline the issues faced by the students while making visa applications, the new regime is brought into place.

The new points-based immigration system comprises of the following:

  1. Students need to highlight that they have an offer from an approved educational institution
  2. They should be able to support themselves financially during their study in UK
  3. Students must possess adequate English language proficiency
  4. In totality, students need to attain 70 points to be able to get a student visa.

  • Taking into account the new wave of students that will be brought into the country post Brexit, the new framework was brought into the picture to ensure that all students who decide to attain their education in UK are treated equally.
  • The uncertainty that looms into the picture due to the pandemic has propelled students to defer their applications. However, with the onset of the new visa regime, the government hopes to aid the students as well as the sponsors to adjust to the new phenomena and make the process easier.
  • Therefore, in the summer of 2021, this new graduate visa route is set to be launched. With this route, those who have completed their study in UK can stay back for a period of 2 years, whilst those students at universities in UK for Ph.D. programs can stay back for three years.
  • During their stay back in UK, students can work at any skill level and switch to the work route if they desire to do so. This acts as a major pull factor for study in UK for Indian students.
  • The UK government has also mentioned that there will not exist a cap on the number of international students who can study in UK.

These steps have been undertaken to attract the trailblazers in the field to ensure that the country as well as the students are mutually able to benefit from the scheme.

The student visa process can be one of the most crucial stages of the application process. We at Edwise as study in UK consultants are at your service to help you through it. Get in touch with us for more details.
