Study in Canada Without IELTS

International Edge

In order to study in Canada, a non-native English language speaker may be required to take an IELTS exam. The IELTS tests a candidate's ability to listen, speak, write, and read. The IELTS score ranges from 5.0 to 7.5, with respect to the institution and program. However, a minimum score of 6.0 is required for a Canadian visa.

Is it possible to pursue education in Canada without appearing for the IELTS exam?

There are a myriad of Canadian universities where passing the IELTS test is not a definite prerequisite for admission. In some cases, universities provide alternative tests. Some of the other institutions will need a candidate to take English courses. Some waive the requirement if you have spent at least three years studying at an institution that uses English as the medium of instruction.

What are the substitute proficiency tests for IELTS?

The IELTS is a popular standardized English language test. The IELTS assessment will be familiar to those applying to study abroad. TOEFL, the new Duolingo English Test, CAE, CAEL, MELAB, and other examinations focused on business personnel, diplomats, and other working professionals are examples of similar tests.

The IELTS is by far the most popular test, with the TOEFL close behind. The Duolingo English Test is also gaining traction. These exams are meant to ensure that the candidate can communicate effectively in English.

Consider the following five Canadian institutions that do not require IELTS for admission:

University of Saskatchewan (USask)

The University of Saskatchewan is a public university in Saskatoon. It is a premier institution in the medical and doctorate disciplines, with a strong emphasis on research-intensive learning. Applicants to The University of Saskatchewan can submit a higher or secondary education certificate stating that English was the language of instruction at that institution instead of applying for IELTS. Students can submit TOEFL, iBT, CAEL, Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), CAE, or the Duolingo English Test scores.

University of Regina

The University of Regina is a friendly and welcoming institution that values diversity and currently houses 16,664 students. The University of Regina, a critically praised institution, is one of the top 50 institutions founded in the last 50 years. Aside from IELTS, the University of Regina accepts the following exam scores: TOEFL or TOEFL iBT, Duolingo English Test, and CAEL.

Brock University

Brock University in Niagara, Ontario, is a prestigious university with nearly 9,000 students divided over seven faculties. Brock University emphasizes cooperative and service learning approaches, allowing its students to flourish in their chosen fields. Students applying to Brock can submit their TOEFL, Duolingo, Cambridge Advanced English CAEL, and other exam scores immediately through a gateway on their website. Because Brock's language of instruction is English, this is required for admission.

Cambrian College

Cambrian College has three campuses and approximately nine hundred part-time and eighty full-time programmes. In addition to the usual English proficiency examinations such as TOEFL, Duolingo English Test, and so forth, applicants to Cambrian can choose the English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP). This program lasts between four and ten months, with the opportunity to accelerate the procedure.

University of Guelph

The University of Guelph is a university that emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning. Standardized exam results are necessary, and they accept CAE, TOEFL, TOEFL iBT, and other tests. They also provide a variety of English Language Programs. For entrance or application reasons, a U of G English language certificate is acceptable.
