Different Pathways To Attaining Permanent Residency In Canada For International Students After Study

February 2022

With the Canadian government setting a target that aims to welcome 12 lakh immigrants from 2021-2023, curiosity among many students to know the pathways to attain permanent residency in Canada has amplified. In the following three years particularly, Canada will target 4,01,000 permanent residents in 2021, 4,11,000 in 2022, and 4,21,000 in 2023. Indian students comprise one-third of Canada's international students and thus, this will benefit them directly.

Study in Australia

Numerous immigration pathways have been offered by Canadian federal and provincial governments of which few require work experience or a job offer, which can be obtained through a Post-Graduation Work Permit.

Post-Graduation Work Permit:

Upon completion of their study programs, the Post-Graduation Work Permit allows international students to stay back in Canada for up to 3 years, and thus it is an important component for them. During this period, the student can search for suitable jobs, earn valuable work experience, and then apply for permanent residency.

Express Entry is the fastest way to settle in the country.

Express Entry:

PR applications for three economic immigration programs viz. Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program, and Federal Skilled Trades Program are managed by an online system namely, the Express Entry.

Qualified candidates submit their profiles to the Express Entry pool to participate in one of these programs. Applicants are awarded CRS points based on their profile, including age, language proficiency, education, work experience, etc. by IRCC.

Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence is issued by IRCC, approximately every two weeks to the outstanding candidates.

International students who graduate in Canada may earn up to 30 additional Points on top of the points obtained by them for their education level.

Canadian Express Class:

Canadian Express Class, also known as CEC is one of the quickest ways to settle in Canada. A minimum of 1 year of full-time or an equal amount of part-time work experience is needed to apply under CEC. The work experience that one possesses should not be older than 3 years and should be as per the National Occupation Classification code 0, A, and B.

Students should keep in mind that the part-time work experience they gain during the study program is not valid for eligibility.

Federal Skilled Worker Class:

PR applications are also lodged by a few international students under FSW. Here, the candidate's job experience does not require a Canadian connection and this is the main benefit of FSW. Nevertheless, it must be as per the National Occupation Classification code 0, A, and B. There is no requirement for a job offer, but candidates who possess a valid job offer may get selection criteria points.

All the occupations in the Canadian labor market are contained in a list called the National Occupation Classification (NOC). For further information regarding the same, get in touch with the counselors at Edwise.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

With a focus on specific needs of the region, Canadian Provinces and Territories have more than 80 PNP streams. A few streams allow the local governments to recruit immigrants directly through Express Entry, also referred to as Enhanced Provincial Nomination. 600 additional points are also awarded to the applicant by the EPN under the Comprehensive Ranking System. This is generally sufficient for an Invitation To Apply (ITA). In comparison to the Base Provincial Nomination, which is Regular PNP streams outside the Express Entry, the EPN normally takes less time. Nunavut and Quebec run separate immigration programs.

For candidates wanting to reside in a specific province or territory (except for Quebec, which has its own immigration pathway) and possess the right skills to contribute to its economy, the Provincial Nominee Program is perfect. The various streams under which eligible candidates can apply to the Provincial Nominee Program are:

  • Students
  • Skilled Workers
  • Business People
  • Semi-skilled Workers

After one completes his/her studies at a Canadian institution, he/she may be eligible for the PNP.

Quebec Experience Program (PEQ):

The province of Quebec possesses its own unique set of immigration rules and requirements that differs from the rest of Canada. A well-known immigration program among students who complete their degrees in Quebec is PEQ.

Qualified students, to be eligible for the PEQ Graduate Studies Stream, require to have at least 1 year of full-time Quebec work experience in jobs falling within National Occupation Classification (NOC) codes 0, A, and B.
