In order to study medicine in the USA, students are required to possess a 4-year pre-medicine undergraduate degree that has relevant subjects along with the ability to demonstrate scientific skills in Biology, Chemistry.

MCAT

Students are also required to appear for the MCAT one year prior to their joining the course. Each of the four sections is scored from a range of 118-132 with a median score of 125. The total score is a sum of all the individual sections ranging from 472-582, with a median score of 500. Scores for the MCAT are released on a pre-determined date, 30-35 days post the examination. MCAT consists of four sections namely, Chemical and Physical Foundation of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, Psychological Social and Biological Foundation of Behaviour.

Admission Process

To study medicine in USA, students need to make an application through AMCAS which delivers their coursework directly to the university. It charges a fee of $160 for one university and $38 for more. Application for the same open in the first week of May. Certain universities in USA may follow a different application process.

Practicing Medicine in USA

Once the student clears the MCAT and attains admission for a program that is 4-5 years in duration they can then appear for the USMLE which is a licensing examination in their area of specialization. International students in the USA then need to apply to the ECFMG which is a three-step process. The steps comprise testing a student's ability in general medicine, clinical knowledge and clinical skills. Out of which the first step can be given during their course of study in USA itself. Students can apply for the ECFMG Certificate after their graduation and completion of 1-2 years of GEM in order to apply for licensing to practice medicine in the USA.

Psychology courses in USA

Application of the same needs to be made one year prior to the commencement of the course and the overall performance of the student is judged. Requirements to study Psychology at the undergraduate level

Students can study Psychology either through a B.Sc. or a B.A. The nature of the course depends on scientific affinity. For instance, a Clinal Psychology program could be B.Sc. since mathematic inquiry comes into play. On the other hand, Counselling Psychology would be a B.A. A four-year program student needs to appear for the SAT. An SAT score between 1400-1500 is considered good. Moreover, students also need to showcase English proficiency skills through either the IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.

Requirements to study Psychology at the postgraduate level

Students can Psychology either through the M.A or M.Sc. In some cases, students are required to appear for the GRE, this may be required in case a student is making an application for an M.Sc. program since it has a more scientific inclination. A GRE score of a 300 or more is considered good. The duration of a Master's program in Psychology in the USA lasts for a period of one-two years.
