Location & Facilities
London, the home of the 2012 Olympics, is the capital of England situated in the south-east of the country and virtually on the doorstep of our Maritime Greenwich Campus and Avery Hill Campus.
It is a thriving city, not to be missed, offering a host of events and tourist attractions to visit: from the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. In addition to all the shops and restaurants to enjoy while you are there, London is not only a place to visit and to socialise with friends but also offers opportunities to aid your studies and cultural knowledge.
Whether it is science, history, fashion or art and design that interest you, there are museums, galleries (many of which are free to visit) and libraries including the British Library where you can carry out research in your field.
The University of Greenwich is located over three campuses:
Greenwich Campus: The Greenwich Campus is on a World Heritage Site on the banks of the Thames. The university's largest campus is centred on three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. "More breathtaking than the Versailles of Louis XIV" is how The Independent newspaper described it. Home to the schools of Business, Computing and Mathematics, Greenwich Maritime Institute, Humanities and Social Sciences and Law.
Medway Campus: The splendid Edwardian redbrick and ivy-clad campus - dating from 1903 has benefited from 50 million pounds in investment since 1996. Extensive new laboratories and research facilities have recently been opened. Home to the Schools of Engineering, Science and Pharmacy, Natural Resources Institute.
Avery Hill Campus: Set in the 86-acre Avery Hill Park in Eltham, south-east London, this campus occupies two locations - Mansion Site and Southwood Site, a few minutes' walk apart. Together with combine the style and grace of a Victorian mansion with the best of modern teaching, living and sporting facilities.
Home to the Schools of Architecture and Construction and Education and Training and Health and Social Care.
There are extensive free library and computing laboratory facilities on each campus. The libraries offer a wide selection of books and journals tailored for your subject needs as well as access to electronic journals and bibliographic databases. Areas are set aside for quiet study. There are free computing laboratories comprising PC networks and connection points for laptops. A
range of printers, scanners and potters are available as well as general and subject specific software to enable you to carry out your work. Staff are on hand to help you with any problems you might experience.
The University of Greenwich Students' Union represents the interest of all students and provides in-house social facilities and support. Each campus has a Students' Union where you can go for advice and information or make use of the social venues where you can get together with friends. For those who want to participate in fitness activities, both our Avery Hill and Medway campuses offer sports facilities.
The university has won two research-based Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher Education. The University of Greenwich generates around £18 million in research and consultancy income every year. Students benefit from being taught in a research environment where staff share expertise and specialist facilities. The university currently has over 350 research students undertaking both MPhil and PhD degrees.
