Scholarships and Financial Aid


Scholarships in Canada are limited in nature and only cover a certain cost of the course. If you have attained exceptional academic results, your chances of attaining scholarships at universities and colleges in Canada increase. The amount you will attain varies from institutions, that will cover a certain section of your education and living expenses. Applications are usually made directly to the institution. However, Community and Career Colleges along with school boards and private schools don’t usually offer scholarships.

Visa


To be able to study in Canada, you need to have a valid study permit. To attain the same you need to make an application and incur a stipulated fee. An indicative value of what you may be expected to pay is C$150. While making the application, you are required to depict payment of fees along with stipulated cost of living at indicatively C$ 10,000.

Health Insurance


As an international student, you must have health insurance. The medical coverage that will be available to you is variable according to the province under consideration. In certain provinces international students are covered under medical insurance, however in some they are not. In such a case you will have to arrange for the same.

Transportation


As an international student, you will be using public transport on a large basis. Facilities such as those of buses, bikes and metro will be utilized. Furthermore, you will also incur immense walking. Certain cities have trains and ferries, for which you can make monthly passes, these indicatively cost between C$80-C$110. Apart from these, certain modes of transportation offer discounts for students like you.

Taxes


As an Indian student studying in universities and colleges in Canada if you are permitted to under part time work you can do so. However, upon doing so your income earned will be taxed. Having the Social Insurance Number plays a hand in the same.

Work Opportunities


International students are permitted to work for 20 hours per week, off-campus during the course and 40 hours per week during vacations. You can expect to approximately earn C$11-C$14 per hour. Universities and colleges in Canada also offer Co-Operative Work programs, which enables you to gain first hand experience while studying. These programs last between 12-17 weeks. Working through these full-time off campus programs, you can approximately earn between C$700-C$900 per month.
