The education system in the USA is not centralized therefore each institution is at the liberty to create their program and admission standard. Classification of Degrees:


Summer Program

Lasting from six to ten weeks, these are programs conducted during summer vacations. A wide range of courses are offered, so if you wish to explore a course outside your major or kickstart your degree, summer programs are the way to go. To attend one you may be required to give a TOEFL or IELTS or PTE.

Associate Degree

Awarded by Community, Junior and Business Colleges, these programs last for two years. An associate degree is analogous to the initial two years of a four year university or college Bachelor degree. To study the said course you need to appear for either a TOEFL or IELTS or PTE.

Bachelor's Degree

Equivalent to an undergraduate degree, the duration of the same is four years. These can be obtained in two types, B.A or B.S. The entry requirement for the said degree includes SAT or ACT along with TOEFL or IELTS or PTE. If you have completed a part of your undergraduate studies and look to study in USA, you can make an application as a transfer student.

Master’s Degree

To study a Master's program, 16 years of education becomes mandatory. The duration is variable from one to two years, depending upon university and specialization. Apart from those who have attained their under-graduation in engineering, students will have to complete one year of Master's. Certain entry requirements such as those of postgraduate diploma or 3 years of Bachelor's degree have been made by a few US colleges and universities.

Doctorate/ PhD

The duration of the same ranges from 3-5 years. To make an application for the said programme, not only do you have to complete your Master's program but also submit a research proposal. Along with this you are required to appear for GRE/GMAT or TOEFL/IELTS/PTE.

Classification of Universities:


Community Colleges

Its an institution that provides higher education along with lower level tertiary education. Granting Certificates, Diplomas and Associate Degrees also fall within its ambit. They are also known as County or City College.

Small Liberal Arts Colleges

Usually old and private, these focus on arts and science disciplines. They are highly rated due to certain features that include small class size, individual attention, student faculty ratio and many other features.

Public Universities

Large state affiliated institutions, they receive funds through public taxes. They are usually economical when compared to private universities and offer all levels of degrees along with a diverse range of study options.

Private Institutes

World renowned, these run without government command.

Technical Institutes

These institutes specialize in science and engineering programs. They have received eminence for their research and graduate facilities.

Ivy League

Old and renowned, these focus on undergraduate liberal arts education. However, they also have in their ambit, graduate and professional schools. The quality of education offered at these institutions are high, thus entry is extremely competitive in nature.

Grading System

Grading System US colleges and universities utilize the Grade Point Average System to judge your performance. Graded between 0-4, with 0 being at the lower end and 4 being on the higher end.

Intakes

Major intake of US colleges and universities is in Fall during August and September, whilst some also have a Spring intake in January/February/March. Summer and Winter intakes are also available.

Fees

The fees you will have to pay are determined by the course and university of your choice. Approximately undergraduate programs range between $15000-$30000. Similarly postgraduate programs range approximately between $15000-$35000.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Financial aid will be awarded to you on the basis of merit or need. If you have strong academics, good grades in standardized exams and extra-curricular achievements your chances for availing financial aid increases. To attain the same, make sure you adhere to all the deadlines and present your application in an alluring manner.
