Study in UK: What Does It Cost?

Accommodation Arrangements In UK:

Students who choose to study either an undergraduate or postgraduate program in UK are guaranteed accommodation by a large number of universities in UK in their Halls of Residence for at least the first year of their study. The student, however, should inform the university within the prescribed deadline. Students who study in UK can opt for three types of accommodation viz. On-Campus, Off-Campus, and Homestay. They can choose to stay in college hostels, rented apartments or flats, or even with a host family during their study at the institution.

Universities in UK consist of Halls of Residence that generally cost between £135-£340. On the other hand, private student accommodation in the country ranges between £160-£500. The approximate cost of rented apartments in the UK is between£120-£10000. Accommodation costs in the UK vary largely depending on the location and facilities offered.

Scholarships, Grants, and Financial Aid:

Usually funded by the Government, universities in UK have slender funds available for the university to distribute amongst its students, either in the form of bursaries or scholarships. A few universities have certain awards which are conferred to students on the basis of their merit of performance during the course. Indian students who study in UK have access to certain special scholarships. These scholarships are exclusive of the ones offered by individual departments. Sponsored awards namely the Chevening Scholarship, Commonwealth Scholarship, DIFD Scholarship are also offered to students. These scholarships are largely competitive in nature and thus, requires students to apply for the same in advance.

Visa:

Students who wish to study in UK need to have a valid student visa. For this the student is required to make an application and pay the fee amount. The fee amount for the same is approximately £322.

Employment Opportunities:

Students are eligible to work for 20 hours a week during their course duration and full time during course breaks. A student can expect to earn £5-£7 per hour, which amounts to approximately £375-£525 per month during the term duration.

Cost of Travel:

Students who have decided to study in UK will avail of public transport on a large scale. The train network in the country connects various cities. Students who study in UK full-time can apply for a '16-25 railcard'. This aids the student in reducing the cost incurred during travelling. The public uses underground services to a large extent. Students can use the Student Oyster Card in order to save costs. One can also avail of the services provided by buses and coaches that helps you save up to a certain percentage of the cost. Taxis and cars are available in abundance but students should make sure to check the meter. A large number of students travel to places on their cycles. Forming an important component of the cost framework, reservations for flight travel to the UK should be made in advance. While pursuing studies in UK, students at times, may travel to nearby European countries for a vacation. Flight tickets for the same should be booked by the student in advance in order to save some costs.

Health Costs:

International students who have decided to study in the UK for a duration of six months or more, qualify for Health Care. This is referred to as the National Health Service, which requires the student to pay a nominal surcharge at the time of applying for a visa.

A large number of discounts on behalf of students on things like stationery, clothes, books, travel, food, and entertainment are arranged by the National Union of Students. All students are entitled to free NUS membership.
