What is the Graduate Route?

With the goal of making education in UK more accessible and easier for graduate students to secure employment that can contribute to the economy of the UK, the country announced that it will launch a 'Graduate Immigration Route' for international students.

This route will allow students who complete courses in UK to stay back and search for employment. This allows students to gain professional experience in their field of interest and potentially become permanent residents of the country.

In 2020, the UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, announced The Graduate Route Visa, a new post-study work visa for international students. This offers graduates the option to apply for the right to stay on for job experience at the end of their university courses.

How will this benefit Indian students?

Speaking to the effect of this new route, the Home Secretary said in a statement, "Under the UK Government's points-based immigration system, talented students from India and across the globe now have the opportunity to kick start their careers in the UK at the highest levels of business, science, technology and the arts."

This is a big win for aspiring international students from India to eventually immigrate to the UK to expand their professional prospects.

This route is eligible for graduates who have been awarded a degree from recognized universities in UK.

Beneficiaries receive the right to extend their visas and essentially settle in the U.K., which is subject to meeting certain criterion set by the country.

This route is now open for applications, especially those that have opted for courses based on work prospects in the UK.

Covid 19 and study in UK

Though the country is currently facing a third wave of infections, this has not phased universities and study in UK.

With a large portion of the population, more than 55%, being vaccinated against the virus, the country has lifted various curbs and restrictions previously imposed. While a mask mandate has been suggested to the population is not compulsory.

These relaxations have been announced in a bout to return to a sense of normalcy amid the pandemic.

Students can still apply to courses in UK and secure admission to the same. As the Tier 4 or Student Visa has residential rights, students are eligible to travel to the UK for their study. Student arrivals, however, have to undergo institutional quarantine for 10 days as per the government guidelines.

Students are advised to be fully vaccinated before they travel as they could avoid the quarantine clause; this however is only speculation, awaiting updates from the UK. If the student wants to receive their vaccine on campus, they can download the NHS app and receive their jabs after they arrive in the UK.
