Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 Sports University of the Year!

We are very pleased and proud to announce that the University of Nottingham has been awarded the prestigious Sports University of the Year 2021 by the Sunday Times Good University Guide!

Pleased and proud - but maybe not totally surprised after investing over £50 million in sports here at UoN over the last decade and with us cementing our place at the top of the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sports) league with a 2nd place overall in 2018/19 and being in current 1st place for the interrupted 2019/20 season.

The £50 million investment includes the David Ross Sports Village, a state of the art, multi-sport facility that offers sport and activities for anyone from complete beginner to Olympic level elite athletes, which opened in October 2016

UoN’s elite level sports men and women are something we are very proud of. Our alumni have won World, Olympic, Commonwealth and European medals across the globe, for example table tennis superstar and Chinese athlete of the century Deng Yaping and London 2012 canoe slalom medallists Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott.

Consider this: If UoN Sport were a country it would have been top 20 in the London 2012 Olympic medal table!

UoN Sport For All!

But UoN Sport is not all about world-beating, super-dedicated elite athletes - far from it. Our sports facilities, teams and clubs offer opportunities for everyone to take part and enjoy leisure-time sports and coaching, from non-competitive games and matches to inter-hall and inter-university competitions.

And when we say everybody has the opportunity to get involved in UoN Sport, we mean Everybody: We were the first University to employ a dedicated Disability Sports Officer and have pioneered several award-winning inclusive sport programmes to ensure all students can get involved at University of Nottingham

We know that trying to fit everything in when you first start university can be a challenge, so we make it as easy as possible to take part with our Engage programme.

Delivered for students by student ambassadors, the programme includes a huge range of sports. There’s no matches or league points to win, so you can just turn up and play for fun.

You don’t need any previous experience to join in and we offer options just for beginners. If you’ve played a little before, then you can jump straight into a game. There is no commitment necessary so you can pick the programme up when it suits you best.

For those who want to take things up a level yet still keep it fun, our Intramural sport scheme (IMS), with weekly games and one-off tournaments, is the perfect way to enjoy competitive sport without the commitment of training or travelling to away games.

You can join a team with your hall of residence, academic course, society or get together with a group of friends to play. The options to choose from are many and varied, including volleyball, tennis, table tennis, squash, badminton, ten-pin bowling, football, netball, hockey, rugby, basketball and even futsal to name a few.

Our IMS campus sports leagues are hugely popular with over 3,000 students taking part every year, including 130 football teams alone!

£50 Million Worth Of World Class Facilities

The David Ross Sports Village provides world-class facilities from swimming pool, gym and a climbing wall to indoor and outdoor pitches and courts to squash courts alongside our physio and treatment suites and well-being facilities such as sauna and steam room.

All of this is backed up by our world-class coaches (our team includes several elite coaches recognised internationally within their sport) and dedicated staff, all committed to helping our student athletes to reach their sporting potential.

So, from the top level of elite sport, to trying something for the first time, University of Nottingham Sport has a huge range of options for our students right on the doorstep of our beautiful campuses.
