Don't be Anti-social :-
As it has been well said, "haste is waste!" So start framing your SOP essay way in advance, just like you would have been preparing for an interview. Know that your SOP is your voice to the institution, therefore it ought to be well framed. Make sure you thoroughly research about all the aspects and include all the relevant details about the course, the institution, your future goals etc.
Considering SOP as an extension of your Resume
Living in a foreign country can make you vulnerable. As you are not familiar with people and situations of the country, you need to be careful while making new friends. Whether your class fellow gets humorous or whether you take training tips from a gym mate, it is important to keep a decent distance until you get familiar with the person.
Don't mess with your Academics :-
Always take your studies abroad seriously and dedicate most of your time to your academic commitments. A few institutions give only pass/fail credits, which imply that you need a C or better to even pass, whereas others calculate your international grades into your GPA. Attend your classes on time, participate in class, and do not miss exams.
Don't be Homesick :-
Don't miss out on opportunities because of homesickness. Do everything you can in the amount of time you are abroad. Conquer phobias, chance on making new relationships, and stick your neck out wherever possible. Don't hold back.
Don't Indulge in Bad Habits :-
Now that you are abroad, you will meet new people and get invited to parties and social gatherings. At a party, there is a possibility that you may be offered alcoholic beverages. Sometimes, exchange students believe that it is part of the culture, so they want to immerse themselves in this new way of life and feel accepted among their peers. Drinking to excess is not a good idea. It is understandable that you want to fit in but it should not be at any cost. You might put yourself at risk and it is not worth it. The best piece of advice is to be reasonable and responsible.
Don't Forget your Documents :-
Imagine you reach the airport check-in only to find that you have forgotten your passport and ticket back home. Having such drastic experiences on the day of your departure can have effects on your mood. Besides, you would not want to miss your classes as a result of any such futile delay. Therefore, it is important that you keep all important documents in your suitcase a day before your departure. It is also a good idea to have copies of them.
