DUOLINGO English Test Overview

The Duolingo English Test is a computer-based proficiency test that evaluates a test taker's Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills. Using computer adaptive technology, the Duolingo exam adjusts the difficulty of questions for each individual. Additionally, the test includes a video interview and a writing sample, which, while not graded, are submitted to the institution along with your proficiency score when you report your results.

Ways to take the Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test is entirely computer-based. After purchasing the test, you can take it from the comfort of your home within 21 days of purchase.

The Duolingo Test Format is as follows:

TYPE OF QUESTIONS:

Read and Select:

  • Identify whether each word on the screen is a real English word by selecting Yes or No

Read and Complete:

  • Complete a short paragraph by filling in the missing letters to form meaningful words

Complete the Sentences:

  • Select the correct word from the options provided to complete a passage with several blank spaces.

Listen and Type:

  • Listen to a sentence and type exactly what you hear.

Interactive Listening: - Listen and Complete :

  • Fill in the missing information in a conversation by listening to the audio carefully.
  • - Listen and Respond: Answer comprehension questions based on the audio conversation.
  • - Summarize the Conversation: Summarize the key points of the conversation in about 75 seconds.

Write About the Photo:

  • Write 1–3 sentences describing an image shown on the screen.

Speak About the Photo:

  • Speak for up to 90 seconds describing the image on the screen.

Read Then Speak:

  • Read a question prompt and then speak about it for up to 90 seconds

Interactive Speaking :

  • : Engage in a conversation-style simulation with 6–8 adaptive speaking prompts from virtual characters. Respond within 35 seconds for each.

Listen Then Speak:

  • Listen to a spoken prompt and speak about it for up to 90 seconds.

Interactive Writing:

  • Step 1: Write on a given topic for 5 minutes
  • Step 2: Write about the related follow-up question in 3 minutes

Writing Sample:

  • (This part is not scored, but it is sent to the institutions) Write a long-form response on a general topic within 3–5 minutes.

Speaking Sample:

  • (This part is not scored, but it is sent to the institutions) Speak on a given topic for up to 3 minutes.

Test Repetition Policy:

  • 3 times in 30 days
Duolingo Scoring

Duolingo English Test is graded out of 160 in 5-point increments. Generally, 115 is considered to be a good score. Test results include an overall score as well as the scores of Literacy, Conversation, Comprehension, and Production sections. The result is available within 2 days of test completion.
