Marywood University - Overview

Marywood University is a co-educational, Catholic private liberal arts university located on a 115-acre campus in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA within the Diocese of Scranton. Established in 1915 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Marywood currently enrolls more than 3,400 students in a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The university has a national arboretum with more than 100 types of trees and shrubs. Marywood's Catholic identity coupled with its mission to educate students to "live responsibility in an interdependent world" encourages students to be socially responsible agents of change.

Program accreditation: Business and Managerial Science Programs granting the B.B.A. Degrees at the Undergraduate Level and the M.B.A. and M.S. in Management Information System Degrees at the Graduate Level are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

The Didactic Program, Internship, and Distance Internship Programs in the Nutrition and Dietetics Department are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)

The Graduate Art Therapy Program of the Department of Visual Arts is accredited by the American Art Therapy Association, Inc.

The Undergraduate Music Therapy Program is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association, Inc.

The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) program in Clinical Psychology is accredited as a doctoral program in clinical psychology by the American Psychological Association (APA).

Programs in Music are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Programs in Art and Design of the Department of Visual Arts are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Masters and Baccalaureate of Social Work degree programs in the School of Social Work are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The Master's Program in Speech-Language Pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Counseling Programs in Elementary Counseling, Secondary School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.

Location & Facilities

Marywood is located in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The campus is 120 miles west of New York City, 115 miles north of Philadelphia, and 60 miles south of Binghamton. It is easily accessible by car, bus, and air.

Students at Marywood, whether they major in Athletic Training and Exercise Science or participate in sports for personal challenge, have access to a wide array of athletic facilities. You'll find a gym, aerobics room, racquetball courts, a weight room, pool, tennis courts and new, expanded playing fields.

In addition to the facilities for sports participation, you'll find a well-equipped Athletic Training room which allows students in the Athletic Training Program to gain experience in the use of whirlpool, ultrasound, electric stimulation, and orthotron. Televisions for viewing videos or DVDs for class assignments. Marywood University offers housing services to foreign undergraduate students. Graduate students and ESL students enrolled in the Intensive English Program (IEP) may be housed in on-campus housing on a first-come-first-serve basis if units are available. The Housing and Residence Life Office is located in the Domiano Center for Student Life. Marywood guarantees housing to all undergraduate students, both foreign and native for four years if desired. Graduate students who do not apply for housing on campus, will need to search for off-campus housing independently. The search for off-campus housing is perhaps the biggest source of anxiety for new international students. Most current students recommend arriving several weeks before classes start so you have ample time to get settled before you become involved in academic life. Housing is reasonably priced in comparison with major US cities. Most rental leases start on the first of each month with the most common start dates being the first of June, July, August, and September. Residences include dormitories, including single rooms and suites, apartments and full houses which accommodate a number of same sex persons for regular academic terms.
