    Overview and Facilities

The University of Waikato is one of New Zealand's most modern and innovative universities, based in the beautiful river city of Hamilton, with a satellite campus in Tauranga

We are home to more than 13,000 students including close to 2,200 international students from over 70 countries. All our degree programmes are internationally recognized, our global connections are wide and strong, and we do everything to help our international students succeed

In 1964 the University of Waikato was officially opened by then Governor-General, Sir BernardFergusson(laterLordBallantrae)

Today Waikato University is home to 13,500 students and has continued to be a breeding ground for independent thought and progressive learning. In 1989 (with a little help from NASA) we connected New Zealand to the Internet before going on to become the first University in New Zealand to have cyber-graduates, completing their teaching degrees online

Our campus now covers some 68 hectares and is a far cry from its modest beginnings in 1964 on what was largely farmland, with a handful of temporary buildings and a few staff

    Location & Facilities

Waikato University is at the heart of adventure country. Raglan and the southern hemisphere's best left-hand break are just 40 minutes away, while the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have some of the country's most beautiful beaches. Waikato is the closest university to Whakapapa's ski resorts, and there are forests, lakes and thermal hot pools within an easy drive of campus

Hamilton is a student city. With more than 46,000 people in tertiary study, there is a huge range of things for students to do and see. Great shopping, cafés, restaurants and bars, international sporting venues, theatre groups, art galleries - you name it, Hamilton's got it

With so much going on for students at The University of Waikato, it pays to know your campus. There are a huge number of services and facilities housed and available on-site, including the newly renovated shops, recreational facilities, car parking, and facilities for parents, and bus services
