North Tec - Overview

  • Introduction

    Originally opened as the Northland Community College in 1978.In 1987 Northland Community College changed its name to Northland Polytechnic and to NorthTec in June 2006.NorthTec is the region's largest provider of tertiary education, with campuses and learning centres in Whangarei city and Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands, and Learning Centres in Rawene on the shores of the Hokianga, Kaikohe and our northernmost site in Kaitaia. NorthTec remains the only Northland-based Tertiary Education Institute (TEI) that provides programmes from foundation to degree level

    The council is the governing body of NorthTec and is constituted as follows.The NorthTec Council is the governance body for the polytechnic. The Council provides oversight for the financial management and operational performance of NorthTec ensuring that NorthTec achieves its objectives, maintains the quality of the its programme delivery and meets the obligations imposed upon it by central government through the Tertiary Education Commission.NorthTec programmes are highly regarded by New Zealand employers. Allare approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), andmany are internationally recognised

    NorthTec degrees are accredited to allow access to postgraduate studies atmost universities around the world, and NorthTec programmes pathway toselected degrees at Massey University, Auckland University of Technology,the University of Waikato and Victoria University of Wellington

    About The university

    • NorthTec is a New Zealand Government (ITP) owned Institute of Technology. Students will receive a quality education that meets the high standards set by the New Zealand Government
    • International and National recognition of NorthTec qualifications
    • NorthTec’s expert academic staff come from around the world where many have taught in Institutes of Technology and Universities. They are warmly welcoming of international students and passionate about teaching. Many of NorthTec’s staff have international reputations in their fields
    • Although 17,000 students studied at NorthTec in 2010, class sizes remain small and there is greater interaction with the lecturers. In the case of hospitality, NorthTec assigns 2 students to 1 stove. In the English Language class, the maximum class size is 12 students

    Near the end of course completion, NorthTec helps their international students to prepare to find employment if they wish to stay in New Zealand. We show our students how to find a job, how to prepare their CV’s and how to prepare for an interview

    Class sizes are small and you will benefit from one-on-one tuition and extra learning support from our experienced International tutors. From the outset, our friendly student support staff will guide and provide you with all the information you require.

    The business programmes have a fast-track option, which means students can finish their studies much faster than the traditional timeframe in New Zealand

    Accommodation

    Homestay accommodation can be arranged with NorthTec-registered Homestay hosts. It is the recommended first accommodation option for all international students.Their own furnished bedroom with an option of two meals a day and Laundry/ use of phone and internet

    Hostel accommodation usually has a single or double room.Kitchen, laundry, outdoor areas and lounges/ TV rooms are shared. Internet access is widely available.

    Flatting Or Shared Accommodation involves renting a house or apartment either with other people or on your own, or can mean moving into an established flat. Kitchens, bathroom, lounge and living areas are shared as are common expenses such as power, water and rent.
