Overview
Orthwood Institute was founded in 1959 by Dr. Arthur E. Turner and Dr. R. Gary Stauffer. One hundred students enrolled at the new school, which was initially located in a 19th century mansion in Alma, Michigan. Northwood Institute moved to Midland, Michigan, in 1961.
Northwood University (NU) is a private university in the United States with multiple locations. More than 33,000 persons have graduated from the institution, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009. Northwood University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association.
The Higher Learning Commission is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Association was founded in 1895 as a membership organization for educational institutions. It is committed to developing and maintaining high standards of excellence.
The Association is one of six regional institutional accrediting associations in the United States. Through its Commissions, it accredits and thereby grants membership to educational institutions in the nineteen-state North Central region.
The Higher Learning Commission is recognized by the Secretary of Education and the Committee on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation (CORPA, now continued under the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, or CHEA).

Florida Campus Seahawks: The Florida campus of Northwood University is a member of the NAIA,competing as the Seahawks in the florida Sun conference.Varsity sports sponsored by the campus include baseball,mens & womens basketball,mens & womens golf , mens & womens soccer,softball , mens & womens tennis ,womens volleyball & cheerleading.
Michigan Campus Timberwolves: The Michigan campus of Northwood University competes as the Timberwolves & is a member of the NCAA ,competing at the division 2 level & is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Texas Campus Knights: The texas campus of Northwood University competes as the Knights in the NAIA,& is a member of the Red River Athletic Conference
