International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally
recognized, standardized English proficiency test that assesses English language skills
for those who are looking to enrol at a university or college, apply to business
organisations, or register for a visa from government agencies in English speaking
countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.
It is recognized by over thousands of organizations worldwide including private
institutions, employers, professional organizations, and government agencies who

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge
Assessment English. It tests one's ability to listen, read, write and speak in English.
There are two types of testing: IELTS Academic, for higher educational or professional
training purposes and IELTS General Training, for migration, work or training purposes.
All test takers take the same listening and speaking tests, while the reading and
writing tests differ, on whether the test taker opts for the Academic or General
Training version of the test. Timing for each section, reporting of scores and grading
system all remain the same.
The IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are both valid for a period of 2 years and
cover a full range of abilities from non-user (Band 1) to expert user (Band 9). Test
dates are available across various cities with no restrictions on the number of times
one can retake this test.
No minimum score is required to pass the test, however, each institution or organization
sets a different score threshold. Procuring a high score reflects your proficiency in
the language and additionally aids one with acceptance into advanced programmes for the
purpose of work or study.
