Students who decide to study abroad in Malaysia are allowed to work on a part-time basis during semester breaks, festive holidays or more than seven days of holiday for a maximum of 20 hours a week. International students are permitted to work in restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets and hotels except in the following positions: cashier, singer, masseur, musician, Guest Relations Officer.

All students aspiring to work part-time must have a valid 'Student Pass'.

Applicants for the ‘Student Pass’ should submit:

• A photocopy of their passport (pages containing information of the bearer and the valid Student Pass pages)
• Address, Contact number and letter from the prospective employer
• RM120.00 (Non-refundable processing fee)
• The application to work part-time must be forwarded by the representative of the University to the Immigration Department Headquarters Malaysia. The University must provide a supporting letter allowing the Non-Malaysian student to work, and which includes the dates of the semester breaks.
• Students will be interviewed, after which the application will be either approved/declined.
• The passport of students whose application has been approved will be endorsed accordingly.

The University is required to submit a quarterly report to the Immigration Department about the students’ academic progress. The extension of the approval to work will only be given if the student maintains a good academic record during their study in Malaysia.

Wages:

The drawback of living in a place where the cost of living is less is that the salaries on offer are also not very high. Wages usually get capped at around RM 150 for a week’s worth of work. These earnings can be used for minor expenses and one definitely needs to have strong financial support to live and study in Malaysia. One cannot subsist on wages earned by part-time work.

Post-Study Work Rights:

The scenario is not that great for international students to find a job within Malaysia after their studies. When a job is announced the first preference is for Malaysian citizens. It is advisable to look for a job in one's own country rather than waiting and finding a job in Malaysia. International students who are lucky to land a job in Malaysia on completing their studies; need to secure an ‘Employment Pass’ before they can start working.

MIS Scholarship for Undergraduate studies

Scholarships are intended for promising candidates who may be expected to make a significant contribution to their own countries on their return from Malaysia.

MIS Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies

Talented international students with excellent academic records and outstanding co-curricular backgrounds are welcomed to apply for this scholarship and further their studies in any selected and well-established Malaysian public and selected private universities at postgraduate or post-doctoral level.

Commonwealth Scholarship

The CSFP are awarded by the Malaysian Government to the nominated students from the Commonwealth Countries to study at the post-graduate level at any public and selected private university in Malaysia.

There are over 700 private higher educational institutions and universities in Malaysia. Many American and British Universities have set up their campuses in Malaysia for Malaysian as well as international students who wish to study in Malaysia at a lower cost.

All these universities and courses are approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. All courses approved by a country's Ministry of Higher Education stand approved by any other country's Ministry of Higher Education world-wide.

In the Malaysian education structure, there are six categories of educational institutions which are governed by two Ministries, namely:

At Pre-tertiary Level

(The governing authority of pre-tertiary schools is the Ministry of Education)

• Government and Private Sector Kindergartens - follow the National Pre-school Curriculum.
• Government Schools - follow the Malaysian National Curriculum & National Examination.
• Government-aided Schools - follow the Malaysian National Curriculum & National Examination.
• Private Schools - follow the Malaysian National Curriculum & National Examination.
• Foreign System Schools - i.e. international schools and expatriate schools. International schools follow an international curriculum and use English as its medium of instruction while expatriate schools follow the national educational system of other countries using the respective national language of these countries as the medium of instruction. These schools are not bound by the Education Act 1996 but are under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.



At Tertiary Level

(The governing authority of higher educational institutions is the Ministry of Higher Education)

• Government-funded - public universities, polytechnics and colleges.
• Private Higher Educational Institutions (i.e. institutions not funded by government), which include:
1. non-university status institutions such as private colleges.
2. university status institutions such as private universities.
3. foreign university branch campuses e.g. Monash University Malaysia and The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.

(English is the medium of instruction in most of the private higher educational institutions to study in Malaysia)

All applications for student passes by international students are arranged through Malaysian educational institutions. The next-stage processing, approval and issuance of student passes and visas is carried out by the Immigration Department in Malaysia.

Applications will be submitted by the educational institutions to the Director of Pass & Permit Division, Malaysia.

The prospective students will be informed of their application status by the Immigration Department in Malaysia through their educational institutions. This information is imparted within 7 days of the application, irrespective of whether the application has been successful or not. The educational institutions which enrol the students are responsible to make the necessary arrangement pertaining to immigration matters.

Documents Required For Students Pass to study in Malaysia

1. An offer letter or letter of acceptance from the educational institution to the student.
2. Student Pass Application Form (IMM14) in duplicate.
3. Two photocopies of the students Passport / Travel Document.
4. Two passport-sized photographs of the student.
5. The educational institution is required to sign a 'Personal Bond' on behalf of the students. No fee is charged for the Personal Bond.

The Malaysian Immigration Department charges all students a fee of RM60 per year for student passes. Additionally, students who come from countries where entry visas into Malaysia are required will need to pay for an entry visa in Malaysia. The fees for entry visas vary.

How do we process a student Visa to study in Malaysia?

A visa is required but the procedure is simple i.e. You do NOT need to apply for a visa from the Malaysian Embassy in your home country in order to study in Malaysia, with the exception of students from the People's Republic of China. The visa will be issued to you upon your arrival in Malaysia at the immigration check point provided you have valid travel documents and a letter of approval for a student pass by the Malaysian Immigration Department.

What is the 'Student pass' in Malaysia all about?

It is like a replica of a visa. It serves a similar purpose as the visa. The process of applying for a student pass is simple. The Malaysian institution of higher education that has offered international students like you a place to study at their institution will apply for the student pass on your behalf, prior to your arrival in Malaysia.

Applications will be submitted by the respective higher educational institution, to the Director of Pass & Permit Division Malaysia, Immigration Department Headquarters, in Kuala Lumpur (e-Student Pass System). Students do not need to apply directly to the Immigration Department under this procedure.

Prospective students who decide to study abroad in Malaysia will be informed of their application status by the Immigration Department in Malaysia through their educational institutions within an estimated 7 to 14 days after the application. A prospective international student must have an approved student pass before entering the country.

What are the employment legislations in Malaysia?

Students are allowed to work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week only during semester breaks or holidays of more than seven days at restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets and hotels as long as their student passes remain valid. Students are NOT permitted to work as cashiers. In addition, in the hotel sector, students are not allowed to work as singers, masseurs, musicians or GROs. Students are not allowed to engage in any job or activity deemed to be immoral, whilst they study in Malaysia.

Application to work part-time must be made through the educational institution at which the student is studying. The student needs to be present with the educational institution representative at the Immigration Department when submitting the application.

Are there any entrance tests to get admitted into Malaysian universities?

Fortunately, no, there are no mandatory test scores required to be submitted but it is always recommended to submit IELTS or TOEFL scores to universities for extra credit that could increase the chance of being admitted.
