Overview

The University of South Florida was founded in 1956 as the first public university established specifically to address the needs of Florida's rapidly emerging urban regions. Today, the University of South Florida System is comprised of two separately accredited institutions, USF and USF St. Petersburg. USF consists of the main research campus in Tampa, which includes USF Health, and two regional campuses - USF Sarasota-Manatee and USF Polytechnic in Lakeland.

At the University of South Florida, federal funds for academic research and development increased 213 percent from 2000 to 2007. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, that makes USF the fastest growing research university in the United States. In the academic year 2008-09, USF reached a new high with $380.4 million in research grants and contracts.

USF serves more than 39,000 students and offers 228 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialist and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine, through its 11 colleges. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.

The University of South Florida St. Petersburg is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award bachelor's and master's degrees.

Scholarships

Undergraduate Admissions offers competitive, merit-based scholarships to new international students each year. International students are eligible for non-need based scholarships. International students must provide appropriate visa/immigration documentation to the International Services Office prior to receiving funds.

There are many different opportunities for graduate students to obtain funding for graduate education. These can be classified into three areas:

  • National Scholarships, Fellowships and Grants. These are funds that are awarded by national, regional, or private agencies to individual graduate students. A number of these opportunities can be found through the Graduate School Funding for Research page. In addition, a number of opportunities can be found through the USF Library's Scholarships, Research Fellowships and Financial Aid page.
  • College, Department or Program Scholarships and Fellowships. These funds are available to USF students and can be searched via the USF Scholarship Database. Students are also encouraged to review their specific college website.
  • USF Graduate School Scholarships and Fellowships. The USF Graduate School is committed to excellence in graduate education and is proud to offer fellowship opportunities for new and continuing students. Some of these fellowships are only available to students through nominations by their Program/Department, while others are available by direct submission from students who meet the eligibly requirements outlined below. It is important to note that funding for the fellowships is limited and the competition for the awards is stiff. In addition, many of the fellowships require that a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) be completed and filed with USF. To be considered for specific awards, it is critical to submit a complete application prior to the stated deadline. Applications received after the deadline will not be reviewed.
