University of Southampton

Overview

The University has a distinguished heritage that can be traced back to the creation of the Hartley Institution in 1862. In 1952 a Royal Charter was granted to the University of Southampton, which enabled the institution to award its own degrees. The University of Southampton is now one of the top 15 research universities in the UK and has achieved consistently high scores for its teaching and learning activities. We are a member of the influential Russell Group - as association of 20 major research universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

We are among the top 100 universities in the world according to the Times Higher World University Rankings 2009 - one of only 17 UK universities to make the top 100. Southampton is one of the UK's leading universities and has been ranked in 12th place by The Sunday Times University Guide 2009, 13th in the Independent Complete University Guide 2010 and joint 15th in The Times Good University Guide 2010. Students from more than 130 different nations study at Southampton and our network of university partnerships spans the globe.

The University has a reputation for leadership in enterprise. We work extensively with industrial partners through collaborative research, student and graduate industry placements, consultancy and new business creation. We have several University Technology Centres with major organisations such as Rolls-Royce, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Microsoft. We have achieved considerable success in the creation of spin-out companies - 12 have been successfully been spun out since 2000; three of these have been floated on London's Alternative Investment Market with a combined market capitalisation of £160 million. In addition, we have a number of world leading members of staff including Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web.

Location & Facilities

Southampton is located in the beautiful county of Hampshire on the south coast of England, just over one hour from central London. The University's main Highfield Campus is approximately 3 miles (5 kilometres) from the city centre, providing easy access to the great amenities in town.

The city of Southampton has around 200,000 habitants and is a safe city with plenty of shopping and sports facilities. Southampton Airport connects the city with the rest of the UK and Europe. There are regular ferry services between Southampton and the Isle of Wight as well as between the nearby city of Portsmouth and mainland Europe. The port is one of the most important in the UK and is a common destination for ocean liners. This special connection with the sea is reflected in the strength of all maritime-related areas of study at the University.

The University of Southampton has four campuses in Southampton city: Highfield Campus (where the main library, sports centre and Students' Union are located), Avenue Campus (home of our School of Humanities), Waterfront Campus (where the National Oceanography Centre and the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences are) and Southampton General Hospital. All the campuses are connected through the University Uni-Link bus service.

Living and studying in a new country has its own unique challenges - we have a network of professionals who are here to help: the Visa Guidance Team are trained to assist international students with their visas and other immigration related processes; and The Students' Union Advice and Information Centre who offer offers free and confidential advice regarding any matter affecting everyday student life: finances, stress etc. In addition, all our international (non-EU) students are guaranteed accommodation for the complete duration of their studies in our Halls of Residence if: you meet the terms of your offer; normally live outside of Southampton; and are unaccompanied.

Our impressive range of sporting facilities are among the best of any UK university. The Jubilee Sports Centre is a state-of-the-art, £8.5 million complex. Highfield campus is also the location for the Nuffield Theatre, recognised in Great Britain and abroad as a major force in UK theatre and provides students discount; the Turner Simms Concert Hall hosts leading musicians from the worlds of classical, jazz, folk and world music and is also one of the UK's leading venues for chamber music; the John Hansard Gallery has an international reputation for exciting and innovative shows by leading British and international artists. We have in excess of 200 clubs and societies, over 100 of which are organised around international students.
