The University of Sheffield was founded in 1905 with its origins in the Sheffield School of Medicine which opened in 1828. Over the past century, the University has grown to more than 25,000 students with over 5,100 international students from more than 120 countries of which 3,700 from outside Europe. The University offers study opportunities across many disciplines, including Physics, Computer Science, Biomedical Sciences and Economics, Business and Information Management, Law, Architecture, Engineering, Pure Sciences, Medicine & Dentistry.
Our campus is a mixture of the traditional and modern, stretching from the city centre towards Sheffield's pleasant suburbs. The University of Sheffield is at the forefront of teaching and research. Our teaching is informed by the latest developments in each discipline. In teaching, 29 of our subject areas are officially rated as "Excellent", an achievement surpassed by only two other UK universities.
In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise 2008 Sheffield firmly placed itself in the Top 10 in the Russell Group for research strength and quality. The Russell Group is the association of leading UK research-intensive universities.
Sheffield's quality, breadth and volume of research activity is further demonstrated by the fact that research carried out by 93% the University's academic staff submitted is internationally recognised and in many cases world-leading. The University is also among one of only ten universities in the UK that submitted more than 40 units of assessment, with over 90% our eligible staff included in the RAE.
University has recently won our sixth Queen's Anniversary Prize for our Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing. This is a prime example of our strong relationships with global organisations who are attracted by our world-class research and invest millions of pounds in collaboration with University of Sheffield.
Location & Facilities
Sheffield is a vibrant city, centrally located in the UK and a very popular choice with international students due to its highly rated student life.
Sheffield is the fifth largest city in England yet students are reassured by its reputation as one of the country's friendliest and safest cities. It is a diverse place to live with residents of all nationalities and cultures. In addition, Sheffield has one of the lowest costs of living in the UK as demonstrated by the 2008 'Natwest Student Living Index' which highlighted that Sheffield has the third lowest costs of living of all university cities in the UK.
Located in the heart of the UK, Sheffield has excellent transport links to other cities making it easy to travel around. The University campus is located in the city centre, yet only a short drive from the Peak District National Park, making Sheffield England's greenest city. The tranquillity of the countryside contrasts with vibrant city life, and students enjoy the city's cultural amenities including multi-screen cinemas, concert venues, leisure complexes, a great nightlife and an arts scene for all tastes. The University's Students Union has in 2008 been voted as the best in the UK. Sheffield is also a city of sport. The city boasts two major football teams and professional ice hockey and basketball teams, world class athletic facilities and Europe's largest artificial all-season ski resort.
