University of Cumbria

Overview

Welcome to the University of Cumbria:

We are one of Britain's newest universities, but we have a history of educating professionals going back over 150 years. We were formed in 2007 from Cumbria Institute of the Arts, St Martin's College and the Cumbrian campus of UCLan.

With academic strengths in teacher training and education, healthcare, sports, business/management, visual and performing arts, humanities, social science, law and criminology, science, outdoors, forestry and land studies we will have a great course to start your career.

Our campuses are in Carlisle, Lancaster and Ambleside. These are lively, safe, student-friendly cities with a lower than average cost of living. Transport links are excellent. We are on the West Coast mainline rail network and close to the M6 motorway. Carlisle to Lancaster is approximately one hour in a car or train. Lancaster to Manchester is just 55 mins on half hourly rail service.

The campuses are compact and situated within walking distance of the city centres. The great outdoors is on our doorstep from city centre parks to National Parks and the university's clubs and societies will help you to take advantage of all that our spectacular surroundings have to offer.

USP’s for International Students
1. Pursue your passion
Working with children and young people is one of the most important and rewarding roles a person can aspire to.  We will equip you for your career so you will have the opportunity to fulfil your own potential, whilst ensuring that the children and young people with whom you work fulfil theirs too. Whether it be teaching, working in the community or caring for young people, if you have a passion, we have the course for you.

2. Job satisfaction
'Twice as many teachers find their work extremely enjoyable compared to professionals with careers in marketing, IT and accountancy.' - National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL)

3. Flexibility
We offer all the major routes to becoming a teacher – this means that if you have the potential to make a good teacher, we will find the right route for you.

4. Diverse professional experience
The university works in partnership with more than 1250 schools and other educational settings across Lancashire, Cumbria and the wider region.

In London, the partnership includes schools in Newham, Tower Hamlets and the wider South-East region.

This means you have access to a wide and diverse range of professional experiences - all of which will help you get a job when you qualify in your chosen profession.

5. Learning community
Our partnership with local schools and local authorities in the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Newham has received an overwhelming endorsement from Ofsted, reporting that we have built a 'learning community that is making a significant difference to the achievement and life chances of many young learners'.

6. Financial benefits
The starting salary for a newly qualified teacher in England and Wales is £21,888 (or £27,000 if you work in inner London). As you progress through the ranks from teacher to head teacher, you could see your annual salary increase to over £100,000!

7. Employability
The commitment of schools to the partnership has resulted in trainees gaining a wide range of experience in schools, which has prepared them successfully for employment in very small rural or large schools.

8. Career success
A number of schools in Cumbria and Lancashire have a teaching staff entirely made up of people who trained at the University of Cumbria.

9. Professional development
We have developed our MA so it can be studied from anywhere in the world as it can all be done online. And, if you're one of our alumni, you can get a 20% discount.

10. Room to grow
There is plenty of scope for progression and you can start your career as a primary teacher and retire as a head teacher; no matter which route you decide to take in your career, we have courses which can help you succeed in your goals, from masters level modules to a full PhD.

Ambleside accommodation appeal
Accommodation managers at the University of Cumbria are making a plea for private landlords to come forward with housing available for students starting at the Ambleside Campus.

Landlords from Ambleside and the surrounding area with rooms or houses available for students should contact the university as soon as possible to meet the demand of students moving onto their second or third year of study.

Due to demand, university accommodation for first year students in Ambleside will be at capacity. The university would like private landlords who have availability for students to come forward.
