Surrey University

Our history

The University of Surrey was established on 9 September 1966 with the grant of its Royal Charter, but its roots go back to a late nineteenth-century concern to provide greater access to further and higher education for the poorer inhabitants of London.

Battersea Polytechnic Institute
The forerunner of the University, the Battersea Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1891 and began concentrating on science and technology from around 1920, teaching day and evening students for degrees of the University of London.

Its academic reputation steadily grew to the point where, in 1956, it was one of the first institutions to be designated a 'college of advanced technology'. It was renamed Battersea College of Technology in 1957.

Rankings and league tables

In the past year, Surrey has established itself as a top-ten university in the three major national university league table rankings.

We have also been named both 'University of the Year' and 'University of the Year for Student Experience' in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016.

University rankings at a glance

• 4th in the Guardian University Guide 2016
• 5th in the National Student Survey 2015
• 6th in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2015
• 8th in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016
• 8th in the Complete University Guide 2016
• 9th in the Times Higher Education 'Table of Tables' 2015

Surrey is also ranked within the top one per cent of universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings 2015.

Why Surrey University
1. We’re number one
We’re currently ranked number one in the UK in The Guardian University Guide.

2. Over 40 years' experience
We were the first English university to run a tourism course, more than 40 years ago. And, with our approach of developing ‘Philosophic Practitioners’, we’ve been leading the way ever since.

3. Over 8,000 graduates
We’re proud to have over 8,000 graduates from the School, giving us an unrivalled alumni network within Hospitality and Tourism – many of whom are in top positions in their respective industries.

4. Industry connections, industry relevance
Like the rest of the University, we pride ourselves on our extensive connections with industry – helped by our proximity to London and our location in the thriving economy of the South East. From prominent guest speakers through to visits and fieldtrips, our programmes stay at the forefront of the field.

5. Prestigious Professional Training
Due to the excellent connections with industry fostered by the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, we are able to offer Professional Training placements at a variety of fantastic locations in the UK and internationally. We also run an extensive student exchange programme, with schools as far afield as Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore.

6. World-class academics
From producing key research to tailoring the teaching of our programmes, our top academics are shaping the future of their subjects.

7. Our very own restaurant and coffee shop
Lakeside Restaurant provides an ideal training environment for our Hospitality students. Under the expert guidance of the Lakeside professional team, they prepare, produce and serve the finest in seasonally influenced dishes, fresh to order.

8. Exceptional extra-curricular activities
Our Food and Wine Society arranges tastings and site visits, while the Hospitality Entrepreneurs Society is open to all students interested in entrepreneurship within Hospitality and Tourism. The Surrey Tourism and Events Society, meanwhile, stimulates and enhances connections with the tourism and events industries.

9. Recognised for a ‘remarkable contribution’ to the subject
Surrey recently became the first university to receive the prestigious Tourism Society Award, presented to those who have made “an exceptional contribution to the development of tourism in the United Kingdom” – previous recipients of the Award include Her Majesty The Queen, the London 2012 Olympic bid team and the National Trust.

10. Unique accreditations
We are uniquely accredited by the AACSB, the AMBA and the UNWTO, as well as the Institute of Hospitality.

In addition Hazel Farm on the edge of Guildford provides an affordable option with the added benefit of a free bus pass valid throughout the town.

You can access the University easily from all of our Courts of Residence, whether on foot or by bus.

About Our Accommodation
We have over 5000 rooms of various types to suit all budgets. All our Courts, as we call the halls of residence at Surrey, are self-catering with shared kitchen facilities, except for the studio flats (band F) at Manor Park. Almost all rooms are single, although we also have 86 split-level shared rooms (called duplex rooms) in Stag Hill Court, and 40 studio flats at Manor Park that are suitable for couples.

Room bands
Rooms are banded from A to E according to price and amenities. Details of typical rooms in each price band are available from the links below. Applicants may indicate their preferred Band and Campus of rooms, but should be aware that these are preferences only and we cannot guarantee to allocate exactly what has been indicated.
• Band A rooms
• Band B rooms
• Band C rooms
• Band D rooms
• Band E rooms
• Band F rooms

Accessible or adapted rooms
We have a number of rooms throughout the Courts that have been adapted to meet the requirements of students with disabilities, such as wheelchair accessibility or deaf adaptations. If you would like details of what support or adaptations are available, please contact the Additional Learning Support department to discuss your needs.

What you can expect

• All rooms have broadband service and personal belongings insurance included in the rent.
• All rooms are equipped with a bed, desk and chair, reading lamp, bookshelf and storage for clothes. No bedding is supplied. If you would like to purchase a bed-pack, please look in the Online Shop.
• All kitchens are equipped with cooker, fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster, iron and ironing board. Cutlery, crockery, saucepans and containers for separating residents' food in fridges are not supplied.
• All Courts are served by Reception Buildings where residents collect room keys and their mail.
• All Courts, except Bellerby Court, have a communal television room.
• Rooms are allocated according to term dates; for undergraduates this is usually about 38 weeks, or about 50 weeks for postgraduates.
• Different categories of students are usually placed in different buildings/flats within each Court (for example first year undergraduates would normally be housed with other first year undergraduates).
• Most flats are mixed gender but we do have single sex flats in most Courts. In those flats residents are not permitted to have visitors of the opposite sex after 10pm.
• All communal areas and bedrooms are non-smoking.

Postgraduate study discounts for Surrey graduates

If you are a fully self-funded UK, EU or international student who has studied for an undergraduate degree at the University of Surrey campus in Guildford, you will be eligible for a 10% discount on our taught postgraduate Masters programme fees, with effect from September 2013. This scheme is applicable to 2015 Postgraduate Taught entry students.

Students graduating in the summer of 2015 are eligible, as well as alumni from previous years, on receipt of evidence of the award from Surrey and where we can identify that you actually studied in Guildford. Students from SII DUFE are eligible for this scheme.

Associated Institution students are not eligible. Not available to modular self-pacing students.

This scheme will be reviewed annually.

For eligible students the required pre-payment (deposit) of tuition fees due for 2015/16 will have to be paid in order to enrol on your programme, as previously detailed to you by the Admissions team, then the 10% discount (based on the full fee amount for 2015/16) is deducted from the remaining balance. This means the tuition fee invoice, which will be emailed to your University email account in October, will reflect the actual balance due.
