The History group at Hertfordshire
has been highly successful in developing both an international
reput ation
for the quality of its research and national excellence in
teaching. In the last government Research
Assessment Exercise (2001) the history group was awarded an
impressive 5, the highest rank being 5*. It was the only subject
in the university to get a 5 rating. Regarding teaching, the
government’s Quality Assurance Agency completed an inspection of
the History degree at the University of Hertfordshire in July
2003.The reviewers were impressed by what they saw: they
expressed confidence in the standard of the degree and awarded the Group the highest possible ranking in every category of
inspection, namely ‘commendable’. The QAA reported that
‘Students described the teaching as excellent, supportive and
enjoyable’ and concluded that ‘the students are provided with a
high quality and challenging teaching and learning experience’.
From the beginning of the history programme at Hertfordshire it
train students in the key skills of the historian’s craft. You
will be taught to analyse and understand the significance of a
variety of different historical texts from manuscript sources to
films. You will also learn how historians approach the study of
the past and why they produce different and sometimes
conflicting interpretations of events.
History can be studied either full-time or part-time, leading
to the award of a single honours, major, minor or combined
degree. No matter what programme of studies in the humanities
you decide to follow, the history group would encourage you to
try some history modules over your three years.
