Part-time study

Your Timetable

Study patterns can be varied and you may find you have to attend the University on more than one day or evening a week. You should set aside at least the same amount of time again for private study, which may be away from your home or place of work, to study in the learning resources centre, or to meet with other students for a group project. The University Admissions Office will put you in touch with the relevant faculty for more information.

Length of Courses

Degree programmes are normally structured in modules, which are simply a way of measuring how much study is required to achieve a diploma or a degree. You normally need to complete 24 15-credit modules for an honours degree. Part-time students study a maximum of five modules per year, so you should expect to study for five years to achieve your degree. However, there is always the possibility of achieving an intermediate award. You may be able to reach a 'step-off' point and be eligible for a certificate or diploma.

If you have prior higher education or equivalent work experience, it may be possible for this to be taken into account, to enable advanced entry to your chosen programme. For example, if you have an HND in an appropriate subject and are aiming to achieve an honours degree, you may be considered for exemption from Level 1 and Level 2 studies (the equivalent of the first and second year of a full-time degree). You may also be awarded credit for relevant prior learning such as previous courses studied, or your industrial, professional or other experience. This means, for example, that if you have an HND you might be able to study part-time to 'top-up' to an honours degree in as little as two years.

Entry Requirements

Part-time courses normally have the same entry requirements as full-time study. However, if you are a mature student without the standard entry qualifications, we may be able to accept alternative qualifications or work experience for direct entry to degrees and diplomas.
