Undergraduate and TAFE courses
All full time Undergraduate courses (with the exception of
later year entry into engineering and some part- time
engineering/science courses) and the majority of full time
TAFE courses offered by Swinburne, require a Victorian
Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) application. The
appropriate method of applying for a course is contained
in the relevant course entry on CourseFinder.
Applications to VTAC can be made on the form contained in
the VTAC Guide or submitted electronically via the VTAC
website. The VTAC Guide to University and TAFE courses,
which is produced annually, is available from newsagents.
Applications through VTAC commence in July each year.
Timely applications close during the last week of
September and although late applications will be accepted
by VTAC until mid December some courses that have special
requirements will not accept late applications. Please
check the VTAC Guide for details.
Direct Applications
Some later year entry into Higher Education courses,
part-time TAFE courses, and postgraduate courses require
application directly to the University. Most other courses
require application through VTAC (see above). The method
of applying for a course and the appropriate school
contact details are contained in the relevant course entry
on CourseFinder.
Later Year Entry
Most applicants wishing to enter a Swinburne course at
a later year (ie. apply for credit for part of the course)
will need to apply through VTAC, however some Higher
Education Engineering, Science and Technology courses
require direct applications for entry. See the appropriate
couse entry in CourseFinder for application details.
Postgraduate courses
Direct applications are necessary for all postgraduate
study at Swinburne. See the appropriate course entry in
CourseFinder for application details.
VTAC Selection
Year 12 Applicants
Many of Swinburne's courses select applicants based on the
applicant's ENTER and using the middle-band selection
process. This, however, applies only to those courses that
select mainly by ENTER. Many programs use criteria
additional to, or in place of the ENTER (eg. interviews
and folio presentations). Applicants should refer to the
current copy of the VTAC Guide for further details of the
extra requirements for entry to a course.
The ENTER score required for entry into a course cannot be
determined prior to the selection period, because it is
dependent on the number of places available and the number
of applications received. The VTAC Guide and Swinburne's
CourseFinder give a guide to the ENTER scores obtained by
those offered places in the courses last year.
Non Year 12 Applicants
Non Year 12 applicants are individually considered on the
basis of a range of factors, such as previous studies,
work experience, any extra requirements specified for the
course, or for entry under the University's Special Entry
Schemes.
Minimum Entry Requirements apply for applicants holding
complete or incomplete TAFE and University qualifications
who are applying for Swinburne's undergraduate courses.
Special Entry Schemes
Applicants who have not met minimum entry requirements may
be eligible to apply to Swinburne for entry under the
Special Entry Scheme. In all cases, relevant employment
experience and educational background will be taken into
account. Additionally, students applying for all Science
and Engineering courses must have passed the prerequisite
subjects for those courses.
Aboriginal Australians or Torres Strait Islanders
To apply under 'Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait
Islanders' you must apply through VTAC. All indigenous
applicants may provide further information in support of
their VTAC application through the Swinburne Special
Admission Scheme.
Age and education
Applicants who have not satisfied minimum tertiary
entrance requirements, providing they have not been in
full-time secondary school for at least two years, or
applicants who have a non-competitive entry requirement
(including a non-competitive ENTER) that has been
completed a minimum of two years prior to the time of
application for the course are eligible to apply.
To apply under the 'Age and Education' special entry
scheme, you must apply through VTAC.
Applicants under the 'Age and Education' special entry
scheme for 2004 admission and who are applying for the
following courses are also required to sit a Special
Tertiary Admission Test (STAT) Multiple Choice
Hawthorn campus: Business, Business/Arts (Language) Arts,
