                                        About The City

The University of Stirling lies on the outskirts of the town of Stirling, an attractive and ancient town that has played a pivotal role in Scotland's history. The town is dominated by the famous Stirling Castle, an ancient seat of the Scottish crown. The Castle overlooks the Forth Valley to the south-east, and to the North the Ochil Hills and the Trossachs, which dramatically mark the change between Highland and Lowland Scotland. This is where Scotland's Wars of Independence were fought and won during the Middle Ages; for which there is no greater reminder than the National Wallace Monument, which stands as a sentinel above the University campus. Today, however, Stirling is a modern centre, which offers unrivalled access to the Highlands of Scotland, as well as to Glasgow and Edinburgh, both of which are approximately 45 minutes travel from Stirling.

With a population of 35,000, Stirling is both a busy and welcoming town. Most of the big name high street stores share the town centre with a variety of small specialist shops. As well as the University's own on-campus cinema, Stirling has a filmhouse - the Allanpark Cinema - and other entertainment including water slides, ten pin bowling and ice skating. Musically, Stirling Castle is fast becoming an established concert venue; recently playing host to REM, Ocean Colour Scene and Jamiroquai.
