Undergraduate
UCAS
All
applications to study an undergraduate degree course at the
University of Southampton must be made through UCAS (the
Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) and you will need
to complete an application form.
The
form asks you to write a Personal Statement – make sure you
spend time on this as the University of Southampton is
interested in finding out more about your interests and
achievements. UCAS charges a standard application fee of £15 for
a maximum of six choices and £5 for a single choice.
When should I apply?
-
The UCAS application process for all applicants for the
academic year 2006/07 starts on 1 September 2005.
-
15 October 2005: closing date for applications from UK and EU
students to Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary
science/medicine.
-
15 January 2006 is the final date for applications from home
and EU applicants to be guaranteed equal academic
consideration. All those received after this date will
forwarded to institutions until 30 June 2006.
What happens to my application?
The
admissions staff at the University of Southampton will make a
decision on your application about 6-8 weeks after they have
received it from UCAS. If your application is accepted then you
will be invited to attend a visit day and an interview at the
Academic School you have applied to before you make your final
decision.
What qualifications will I need?
Unless you are a mature student, you will need to satisfy the
University’s general entrance requirements. To enter an Academic
School you will usually also be asked to offer specific subjects
and to attain required grades. If you are taking other
qualifications (including international qualifications),
admissions tutors will be happy to advise you on entry
requirements for their courses. In the case of GCSE and GCE
requirements all syllabuses approved by the Qualifications and
Curriculum Authority (QAC) are usually acceptable. This includes
modular syllabuses where they exist and have been approved by
QCA. The same policy applies where named subjects are referred
to in subject course requirements.
What if I take a gap year?
Applications for deferred entry will be considered in the normal
way, but for entry in 2008 the conditions of any offer must be
met in the summer of 2007.
Postgraduate
Entry requirements
To
apply for postgraduate study you must satisfy the general entry
requirements of the Academic School and any specific
requirements of programme to which you are applying.
You
will need to ensure that your qualifications and English
language qualifications meet our entry requirements.
In
addition to your academic qualifications and practical
experience, you will be expected to show evidence of your
interest in the course or research programme, as well as an
understanding of the demands of postgraduate study.
Application deadline
There is no University deadline for applications for taught
courses or research programmes, however some Academic Schools
may have their own application deadlines. You are advised to
apply early if you need to secure a
UK
visa, arrange sponsorship, apply for funding or find
accommodation. Deadlines for research funding are usually at
least six months in advance of the start date.
