Research Degrees

Academic Registry is responsible for the registration and guidance of higher research degree (MPhil, PhD, MD & MS) students.

The full-time research degree programmes for PhD and MD are usually of three years duration, and the MPhil and MS usually two years. The length of the programme and type of research determines the extent of the training. Research degrees may be undertaken over a longer period on a part time basis, subject to satisfactory arrangements for supervision and study.

It is normal practice for the majority of students wishing to obtain a PhD to register initially for the MPhil and to progress to the PhD, subject to a review of their research work at the end of the first year if registered full-time or the second year if part-time.

The main task of a research student is independent research of the chosen topic, working closely with a Director of Studies who will guide and advise throughout the period of research. At the end of the period of study, the results of the research are embodied in a thesis, which is examined at a viva voce examination when a candidate is required to defend his or her thesis.
