 Why Select

Why PLU?
Global Studies presents a holistic view of the rapidly changing and increasingly integrated world in which it lives. The program is based on the idea that events occurring in one area or nation have worldwide ramifications. Based on a multi-disciplinary approach, the program helps you develop a breadth and depth of understanding designed to enhance and accompany your traditional majors. Global Studies also equips you with the ability to analyze pressing world issues, including social change, pollution, industrial growth, food shortages, global energy politics, and human rights.

Career Opportunities
The Global Studies program imparts a wide range of knowledge and perspectives that can be applied to many employment opportunities, both foreign and local. These talents can be put to use in such areas as:

Issue Concentrations

The Global Environment
Probably no issue challenges the global community more than the future of the world's environment. From waterways to the ozone layer, how itlives has a dramatic and long-term effect on the environment and, therefore, the future of humanity. This concentration prepares students with the technical and perceptual skills necessary to begin dealing with environmental issues at the local and global levels.

Development Issues
Eighty percent of the globe's population struggle to develop the resources that lead to a dignified and productive life. This struggle is often called "development," and this concentration focuses on what development means globally and in specific regional and national contexts. Questions about hunger, population, women's contributions, the environment, revolution, and war are discussed and analyzed as part of this concentration.

Global Business
Trade has linked countries for centuries. Today, markets are becoming globalized at an unprecedented pace, and even many small businesses find they must become knowledgeable about doing business in foreign cultures. This concentration exposes students not only to technical aspects of the international economic system and international business practices, but also to cultural differences that are involved in international trade and to adjustments that must be made in dealing across cultures.

Comparative Ethnicities
The interdependence of the world mandates understanding the majority of the world's population whose world views and ways of life differ significantly from those of the United States. This concentration gives you an active knowledge of other cultures and their perceptions of global issues and the world around them.

International Relations
The period of transition at the beginning of the 21st century is a dynamic and critical time in international relations. It is characterized by large-scale technology-induced change, rapid population growth, and an increased demand for natural resources to support industrialization over much of the planet. This concentration focuses on the patterns of interaction between states in the international system as they negotiate over pressing issues.
