Sport
Northumbria
Student and staff sport at the University is managed by
Sport Northumbria. Throughout the year our sports clubs
operate at local, regional and national level, it runs
classes and fitness programmes, organise inter-University
and intra-University sport and offer a wide range of
options to assist in following a healthy life-style.
All sport services within the University are co-ordinated
by Sport Northumbria, including existing and proposed
sports facilities, the extension of an already impressive
sport development programme for students, staff and
community and a significant education and training
programme for the regional and local sporting community.

|
The
services are delivered in four main areas:
1} Health and Fitness (including Exercise Classes)
2} Recreation Sport
3} Sports Clubs
4} Performance Sports
|
|
These
responsibilities cover the widest range of involvement
from trying physical activity and exercise for the first
time, to seeking World Class Performance. It is very
conscious of the differences of motivation and ability and
do our very best to accommodate all levels. Sport Northumbria's ambition is to offer a wide range of
opportunities for a healthy and active lifestyle. It also
seeks to provide ongoing opportunities for club-based
sports and the development of an athlete's potential.

The
University provides an important contribution to the
operational and staffing costs of our Sport Northumbria
programme although our ability to develop and take on new
work is dependent on Sport Northumbria's capacity to
generate revenue. Students, staff and community members
all pay a very competitive charge for accessing programmes
and facilities and these charges are in line with our
widening access agenda. Over the last five years the
University has earned a reputation for providing excellent
support to its students and for offering an increasingly
varied and ambitious programme. There have been many
successes from international representation to increased
levels of recreational involvement.
Over the next five to ten years Sport Northumbria needs to
become more responsive to social trends, better at
communicating to our target markets and increasingly aware
of the importance of our customers. Everyone using the
services It provides is asked to appreciate that our
ambitions are considerable and that it welcomes assistance
from students and others as volunteers, administrators and
coaches.

Sport
Northumbria has an outward looking and unique relationship
with the North East community, largely based on the
Government's and the University's "third Mission for
Universities". This programme encourages higher education
to work with industry and the community, alongside the
teaching and research activities. Sport Northumbria
subscribes to a number of partnerships, including
Northumberland Sport and Tyne and Wear Sport, makes a
contribution to specific sports development programmes
(including basketball, fencing, football, netball and
rugby union) and undertakes research and consultancy
largely based around sport development and high
performance sports.
