School Profile
Kent-Meridian High School (KM)is a quality
comprehensive High School, which was built in
1951. It was the first high school in the Kent
district formed in the 1948 consolidation of the
Panther Lake, Kent, and Meridian School
Districts.
KM offers students an opportunity to enroll in
one of four school-within-a-school (SWS)
programs. Developed around student academic and
school interests, the four programs are:
Applied Science and Technology
Arts, Humanities, and Communication
Health, Science and Human Studies
International and Global Studies
Within each school, participates become part of
a team of teachers and students with common
interests and goals. Course work is designed to
make connections between various subject areas
and potential career options beyond high school.
Skills of effective communication, complex
thinking, self-directed learning, community
participation and quality production are
emphasized in all programs.
Outside of SWS programs, students may choose
additional courses from a board range of
academic applied and co-curricular areas.
Students also have opportunities to participate
in a variety of extra-curricula activities. The
athletic programs are consistently at the top of
the competitive South Puget Sound League,
because of its programs and ongoing commitment
to quality education from KM staff, students,
parents, and community member, KM was awarded
the United States Department of Education Blue
Ribbon School of Excellence Award in 1993-94.
Kent-Meridian High School divided its large high
school into four schools-within-a-school. One of
these schools is the Applied Science and
Technology School (AST) which is the backbone
for the MTAG program. Students enrolled in this
school take classes their first year that
support the MTAG core competencies and learn
manufacturing skills of measurement, safety,
print interpretation, teamwork, and basic shop
skills. These classes include Technical
Communications, Principles of Technology and
Tech Survey. In the Tech Survey class students
complete a quarter of Welding, Automotive
Technology, Building Trades, and/or Drafting and
then design and manufacture a go-cart or a
paddle boat In the second and third year of the
school, students continue Technical
Communications and may also enroll in Welding,
Automotive Technology, Building Trades, or
Drafting. These programs offer an opportunity
for students to learn industry-level skills and
use state-of-the-art equipment.
In addition, Tech Prep articulation agreements
have been established for several of the
programs. This allows students to earn college
credit while still in high school.
