Massey University - Palmerston North Living
Of the 73,000 or so people who live in Palmerston North
a third are aged between fifteen and thirty. Many are
students, making Palmerston North -- or "Palmy" -- a
young person's city with a lively social scene. Here
you'll find a host of cafes and bars, a multiplex
cinema, and New Zealand's only professional theatre
outside of the metropolitan centres.
Sport and
off-campus adventure are part of the city's attraction.
The adidas Institute of Rugby is on the Turitea campus,
and a new all-weather athletics track opens in 2002.
Minutes from campus there are some of the best mountain
bike tracks anywhere. Further afield you will find bungy
jumping, river kayaking, rafting, trout fishing, horse
riding and tramping. In the city centre, it's cafes and
pubs. Live theatre, live music and one of the best city
libraries in the world make a lively arts and
entertainment scene. About 80 student clubs operate on
campus.
The Palmerston North community
supports learning, and enjoys an easy relationship with
the large student population. There's lots of
well-priced accommodation; it's easy to get places on
foot or by pedal power. Palmerston North campus has two
locations. Turitea, set amongst huge trees and beautiful
gardens, is the University's founding campus. Hokowhitu
site is the heart of the University's education studies
and features modern buildings in a picturesque setting
sandwiched between a lush golf course and a lagoon.
Massey
students from Palmerston North say its lower central North
Island location allows them a great lifestyle. It's only a
two-hour drive to shows in Wellington, to vineyards and beaches
in Hawke's Bay or to snow covered ski slopes at Ruapehu in
winter time
