Health - Welcome
Student Services offers health advice for students at the University of
the Arts London. College life brings many new challenges, exciting but at
times daunting. It can be tricky balancing studies, social life and
finances, possibly for the first time. It is important to take care of
yourself and register with a doctor, so that you can take full advantage
of all the opportunities college life offers and enjoy your time as a
student.
If you have a specific health query, you can contact one of the Student
Health Advisers directly (see below). They are happy to give advice or
support on issues such as healthy eating, smoking, alcohol and drugs,
contraception, travel health, exercise, sexual health, pregnancy, stress
and anxiety, depression and mental health problems. Most importantly,
don't struggle on alone, and help yourself to enjoy a healthy time while
you are a student!
If you are feeling unwell or not your usual self, ask for help and make
sure you enjoy your time as a student.
What is Counselling?
Counselling is an active process that is designed to give you the time,
space and encouragement to explore and understand the issues you bring.
The counsellor will be able to help you think about your problems from a
different perspective. Their role is to provide you with a secure
framework in which to reflect upon your circumstances. The aim is, that in
time this will increase your awareness of yourself, your situation, and
the choices that are open to you. Coming for counselling can take courage
as it involves facing yourself and asking someone else for help.
Counselling sessions take place in a comfortable and private setting and
are usually 50 minutes.
As well as individual counselling, the Service offers groups focusing
on stress and relaxation and presentation skills.
There are a number of ways in which counselling can help:
- Dealing with a crisis or immediate concern
- Support with long term difficulties
- Getting access to specialist help
