History of the College

The origins of Liverpool Hope go back to the middle of the last century when the Anglican Diocese of Chester and the Roman Catholic Sisters of Notre Dame established separate teacher education colleges for women in the North West.

These colleges were later called S. Katharine's and Notre Dame. During the 1960s the Archdiocese of Liverpool established a second Roman Catholic teacher education college in Liverpool, Christ's College, on the site adjacent to S. Katharine's. Notre Dame and Christ's College increasingly worked together during the late 1970s and in 1980 Notre Dame merged with Christ's College. In 1980 the

three colleges joined in a federation under the title Liverpool Institute of Higher Education (LIHE).

Expansion followed in both the range of degrees and in student numbers. The status of a fully accredited institution of The University of Liverpool was achieved in 1994. This gave full responsibility to the Institute for the quality and standards of its course provision and provided recognition of its academic standing. In 1995, a single, unified, ecumenical College was established, and a new name - Liverpool Hope - which better reflected the role and mission was adopted.
