Support Services For
Students
The University offers a range of support services to
students.
Student Support Office
The Student Support Office co-ordinates special arrangements
for international students including excursions and social
events throughout the year, and provides information of special
interest to them by means of regular circulars and notice boards
in University House. Information is available on places to visit
in the United Kingdom and homestay visits can be arranged
throughout the year. A student adviser with special
responsibility for international students is available to assist
all students who encounter difficulties which cannot be resolved
elsewhere.
Chaplaincy Centre: The Centre aims to serve all
members of the University whether they are religious or not. The
building is used for many meetings and social functions; it has
a snack bar which is open at lunch times, as well as housing
chaplains and incorporating two chapels where services are held
regularly.
Muslim students may wish to note that the Islamic Society has
a large prayer room facility on campus.
Counselling Service: Offers professional confidential
counselling to any student experiencing difficulties of any
kind.
Health Services: a Local Doctors’ Practice runs a
surgery at Bailrigg House on campus, with male and female
doctors. A University nurse is on duty night and day.
Disability Services: A disability services adviser
co-ordinates arrangements for students experiencing difficulties
of any kind.
Pre School Centre: Child care from 3 months to school
age.
Communication Facilities
Mail
Mail is distributed at each college. You will find your mail
in the college "pigeon holes", arranged alphabetically, in the
area of the college porter's lodge. Check your pigeon-hole when
you arrive and regularly after that, at least once a day.
All official University mail is sent to you this way. You will
not need to include your room number (which you will learn on
arrival) in your address.
Telephone Service
Each room is equipped with a telephone form which students
can make and receive phone calls. A Dog n Bone phone card is
provided in each room, or can be obtained from the Residence or
Telecoms Office.
The Dog n Bone card is a pre-paid calling card which can be
charged on an individual basis. Full instructions on using the
card are provided with the card.
