                    Facilities

George Heriot's School is one of the historic landmarks of the city of Edinburgh. The Old Building of the School dates back to the 1630s, although in more recent years this has been supplemented by an attractive range of buildings which include a main school hall and gymnasium. Fine lawns surround the Lauriston campus site which also add to the historic atmosphere of the School. Across the city, the School also owns first-class grass playing fields and an excellent

Hydraulics Laboratory

The hydraulics laboratory is furnished with two well equipped flumes. The smaller is 10m x 0.3m x 0.45m and the larger 22m x 0.75m x 0.5m. Both flumes use a constant head delivery system, velocity measurement facilities include both Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) and Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV).

Campus Monitoring Equipment

Meteorological monitoring

Two automatic weather stations provide measurements of rainfall, wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and soil temperature. Data is logged with a ten minute sampling interval. The weather stations are placed so that comparisons can be drawn between exposed and sheltered locations.
Streamflow monitoring

Automatic water level recorders provide measurements of stage associated with six streamflow measuring structures. Data is logged with a five minute sampling interval. Figure 3 shows one of the structures - a two-stage rectangular notch weir. The structures have been calibrated in-situ using gulp injection dilution gauging. Figure 4 shows flows at all sites during January 2000 (compare with rainfall data above).
Modelling Software

Various numerical modelling codes have been developed for solving flow and transport equations within the research group, in particular, in the fields of river engineering and groundwater (e.g. PARADIGM: a groundwater code developed for solution of 3D matrix flow and flow within 2D interacting fault planes). These models are under continuing development as exciting new modelling challenges arise. The models are available for application and development by any researchers in the Sustainable Water Management Group, they are not marketed as commercial software.
