Housing
Toronto offers a wide variety of reasonably priced
accommodations in many interesting neighborhoods
In addition to checking the classified section of the
Toronto daily newspapers for rental accommodation, you
can visit the college housing office at St. James
Campus.
A membership fee of $5 (good until May 2002) allows you
to access the GBC housing listings at both St. James and
Casa Loma campuses.
The Housing Service listings are updated weekly. In
order to view the current listings, you must visit the
Housing Service in person.
Most students are able to find suitable housing within
their price range. How long it will take to find this
accommodation will depend on your budget and personal
requirements. If you look every day, it should take
about two weeks to find what you want. Landlords usually
learn that they are going to have something for rent 60
days before it becomes available, so you should time
your search accordingly.
The Housing Market
Most of the accommodation listed at the Housing Service
is located within approximately 30 minutes travel time
from the college. Many students prefer to live within
walking distance of the college. This saves money and
time and also means that students can participate more
easily in a variety of campus activities. However,
because this accommodation is so popular, it is usually
priced somewhat higher and is rented more quickly.
Types of Accommodation Listed
Landlords and students list rooms in shared apartments
and houses, as well as private apartments and houses for
rent. Sharing accommodation with either a family or
another student is the most economical type of student
housing. Sometimes a group of students will look for a
private apartment or house and then share the rent.
Accommodation may be furnished, unfurnished or
semi-furnished. Private apartments and houses are
usually unfurnished. |
