About The City |
A Great
Location
South Wales offers great
value for money, and the British Tourist Authority
recently cited Cardiff as one of the best value cities
in the world. Food, entertainment, accommodation, and
other day-to-day costs are likely to be lower than in many
other parts of the UK. As a student you will also get lots
of concessions on everything from cinema tickets to
haircuts.
When you are not busy studying how are you going to spend
your time? Well, there's a wealth of pubs nearby
that are popular with students and many hold regular
events from quizzes and karaoke to disco
and DJ evenings and a new multiplex cinema is just
a few miles from the University. In Pontypridd you'll find
twice-weekly indoor and outdoor markets alongside a
range of familiar high street stores. There's also
a huge venue that is cinema, theatre and
music hall in one
Arts and
recreation
World-class
theatres,
galleries and museums are within easy reach of
Glamorgan. The National Museum and Gallery houses a
superb collection of Impressionist work, including Renoir,
Cezanne and Monet while the Museum of Welsh Life
and Cardiff Castle are among the UK's top visitor
attractions. Entry to many Welsh museums is now free
to all, allowing you to soak up as much culture as you
like. Alternatively, if you want a vision of the future,
then visit Techniquest, which is the UK's most
visited, fully interactive science discovery centre with a
planetarium and state-of-the-art science theatre. The
Sherman and New Theatre offer mainstream and fringe
productions,
opera and ballet
The Cardiff Bay
waterfront hosts free concerts throughout the year. Here
you'll also find the new Atlantic Wharf leisure complex
with ten pin bowling, multiplex cinema and restaurants
catering for most tastes and budgets.
Music
South Wales is firmly
established on the international tour circuit (not just
for homegrown talent like the Manic Street Preachers,
Stereophonics and Super Furry Animals either). You are
spoilt for choice with an excellent range of concert
venues from the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Castle to
St. David's Hall and the Cardiff International Arena which
host all the top bands.
There is also a thriving small gigs scene with
Cardiff meeting the needs of most music fans, from
classical and opera to jazz and rock. Closer to home
the Pop Factory a couple of miles from the
University attracts the greatest, from Posh Spice to Tom
Jones!
Food and drink
Cheap cafe bars or top restaurants - they're all close to
the University of Glamorgan. Pontypridd has a good
choice of pubs, bars and restaurants while Cardiff is
home to a more cosmopolitan selection of restaurants,
ranging from Japanese to Turkish. And best of all,
eating and drinking locally is probably cheaper than
most other parts of the UK, so you get more for your
money
