MEXICO CITY
The first six days will be spent in the dynamic and, by
turns, exciting and daunting capital of Mexico:
orientation to the city and tour of the historical
centre of the city.
visits to cultural sites and museums (Chapultepec park,
Museum of Anthropology, Casa Azul, Sonora market, etc.)
excursions to archeological site of Teotihuacan, the
colonial town of Tepotzotlan, the shrine of Guadalupe,
and the last remaining 'floating gardens' of Xochimilco
discussion with the Canadian Ambassador to Mexico about
the impact of NAFTA and other issues in Canadian-Mexican
relations.
TLAXCALA
It will travel by bus to Tlaxcala, a small mountain
city-state with important pre-Columbian and colonial
sites. Allies of Cortes against the Aztecs, the
independent Tlaxcalans have always seen themselves as a
separate people. The small city of 50,000 set amidst a
dense pattern of agricultural settlement can be seen
either as idyllic or as a backwater. If you think the
latter,
Puebla is only a 30 minute bus ride away.tour of the
ruins of Cacaxtla, the village and sanctuary of San
Miguel del milagro, Basilica de Ocotlan.
market, regional museum and meal of regional foods.
SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS
It will fly from Mexico to Tuxtla Gutierrez and then go
by van to the highland town of San Cristobal. Local
experts will help us understand the background to the
recurring native/mestizo
conflicts in this area.tours of the city including
discussion with academic and church personnel on the
situation in Chiapas.
visits to the ceremonial centres of Chamula and
Zinacantan.
excursion to the Mayan site of Palenque.
OAXACA
Flying north to Oaxaca, it will spend four nights
enjoying the Zocalo and visiting the
archeological sites, markets, museums and important
churches of the area.Museo Regional, Museo Rufino
Tamayo, Iglesia de Santo Domingo
tour of Zapotec site of Monte Alban and Mixtec site of
Mitla.
the village of Tula and local villages and markets.
discussions and lunch with sociologists and
anthropologists from local institutions.
PUERTO ESCONDIDO
A bus trip from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido is a field
trip in human geography and ethnography as well as an
example of the concept of vertical zonation as it plunges
from the highlands to the sea. In Puerto Escondido it
can study the phenomenon of the conversion of fishing
villages into tourist resorts but thr main purpose will
be to spend a couple of days summarizing the experiences
and completing assignments (though snorkelling is
allowed between classes). It flies to Mexico City the day
before the return to Vancouver.
