In 1855 a
School of Arts was founded in Exeter as a result of the
popular enthusiasm for art and science that followed the
Great Exhibition in 1851. By 1922 it had become the
University College of the South West and was presented with
part of the present-day Streatham Campus which overlooks the
City. The Royal Charter, under which it became the
University of Exeter, was granted in 1955.
In the Late
1970s St Luke's College of Education became part of the
School of Education, which is now one of the largest and
most modern in the country. Most recently, Camborne School
of Mines became part of the University in 1993. |

The
reputation for high quality research and teaching combines
with a superb campus setting to make Exeter one of the most
popular universities in the UK. With nearly 11,000 students,
of which 2,800 are postgraduate and nearly 8,500 full time
students and over 2,000 part-time students; big enough to be
fun, but small enough to be friendly.
You will
find campus life very convenient - all the teaching building
together with the Sports Hall, the Library, the shopping
centre, and the restaurants, coffee bars and bars of
Cornwall House, Devonshire House and the Peter Chalk Centre
are within walking distance of each other. |
