Athlone Institute of Technology was established in 1970. The
principal aim of the Institute is to provide education and
training for the economic, technological, scientific,
commercial, industrial, social and cultural development of the
State, with particular reference to the midlands.
The main campus is situated approximately 1.5 miles from the
town centre on the Dublin Road. The Institute has developed
rapidly since its foundation and to facilitate this growth, the
original building has been extended on several occasions within
the 45-acre landscaped campus.
The main campus building currently houses the Schools of
Business, Management and General Studies, Engineering, and
Science, the Library, the Information Technology Centre, the
main student canteen facilities and the Institute's
Administration offices.
The Institute also has a building on Northgate Street in the
town centre which has been refurbished to cater for the
Departments of Hotel, Catering and Tourism Studies, and Design.
Building is expected to commence on a Tourism/Hospitality
Building and a new Student Services Complex in the near future.
The Institute has developed outreach centres in Cavan and Dublin
and also has links with the Zambian Centre for Accountancy
Studies (ZCAS), Lusaka, Zambia. International Links at AIT
