The Institute
Athlone Institute of Technology was established in 1970. The principal aim
of the Institute is to provide education and training for the economic,
technological, scientific, commercial, industrial, social and cultural
development of the State, with particular reference to the midlands.
The main campus is situated approximately 1.5 miles from the town centre on the
Dublin Road. The Institute has developed rapidly since its foundation and to
facilitate this growth, the original building has been extended on several
occasions within the 45-acre landscaped campus.
The main campus building currently houses the Schools of Business, Management
and General Studies, Engineering and Science, the Library, the Information
Technology Centre, the main student canteen facilities and the Institute's
Administration offices.
The Institute also has a building on Northgate Street in the town centre which
has been refurbished to cater for the Departments of Hotel, Catering and Tourism
Studies, and Design.
Building is expected to commence on a Tourism/Hospitality Building and a new
Student Services Complex in the near future.
The Institute has developed outreach centres in Cavan and Dublin and also has
links with the Zambian Centre for Accountancy Studies (ZCAS), Lusaka, Zambia.

The Campus
A multipurpose hall, lecture theatres, a new library, an information
technlogy centre and an administration block have been added in recent years.
A new student services centre is nearing completion and a catering and tourism
block is about to commence.
The John Count McCormack Centre on the main campus is a multipurpose centre used
as a sports complex, as a venue for student social events, and for large
gatherings of the student body such as examinations, freshers' week exhibitions,
registration and graduation.
1999 also saw the opening of 'Scribes' the Student Social Centre. On- and
off-campus residences are currently in an advanced planning stage.
The Institute currently offers an extensive range of undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes to 4,000 students, which has been a factor in attracting
many industries to the town. It is an important contributor to the local economy
and to the shaping of Athlone's future.
Institute graduates have been very successful in progressing to further studies
and obtaining relevant employment.
