Class Profile:
Undergraduate men-972; Undergraduate women-996;
Graduate men-133; Graduate women-177. The minority
population is approximately 12%. AU students represent 31
states and 20 countries. The student-faculty ratio is a
low 12:1.
Admission Requirements:
Admission is selective. For undergraduates, high
school transcripts, SAT I or ACT scores, letter of
recommendation and essay are required. In general,
admitted undergraduate students have a A, B+ or B High
School average and the middle 50% have SAT scores between
1080 and 1280. Admitted graduate students should have a
3.0 GPA or better.
Tuition:
For 2002-2003, freshman tuition for the
privately-endowed colleges is held at $18,498 under the
Alfred Tuition Plan, $20,376 for new transfer students.
Grad school tuition is $24,720 for 2002-2003.
For the New York State College of Ceramics, undergraduate
tuition for 2002-2003 is $10,272 for in-state students and
$14,160 for out-of-state students. Grad school tuition is
$14,586 for 2002-2003.
Financial Aid:
Alfred University offers merit-based
scholarships, need-based grants, loans, and work-study.
For 2002-03, about 95% of entering freshmen received

Faculty:
There are 164 full-time faculty members. 88% hold a
doctorate or highest degree in their field.
Research:
AU's research programs and the "Centers for
Excellence" complement the academics programs.
Undergraduate students work side-by-side with professors
and are mentored by graduate students in these programs
and centers.
Outcomes:
The most recent survey of AU graduates revealed that
one year after graduation, 94% of all respondents were
either employed or in graduate school.
Alumni:
From corporate board rooms to kindergarten classrooms,
from court rooms to operating rooms, and from research
labs to a theater stage, AU's more than 22,000 alumni are
making their mark.
Athletics:
The AU Saxons compete in 23 NCAA Division III sports.
About 20% of all undergrads play a varsity sport, and half
of all AU students participate in either intramural or
club sports.
Housing:
AU is a residential campus, with a majority of its
2,400 students living in 23 residence halls. Students must
live on campus for four semesters.
Student Life:
AU students are involved in more than 100 clubs and
organizations. The events calendar is filled with concerts
by nationally-known entertainers, comedy clubs, lectures,
film festivals and visiting artist workshops, as well as
dance, music and theatrical performances by AU students
and touring professionals.
