How to
apply - Step by step process
How do I
apply?
All applications for full-time
undergraduate degree programmes at Aberdeen - as to other UK
universities - are made through the Universities and Colleges
Admissions Service (UCAS). The only exceptions are for
part-time courses, and non-graduating or visiting students,
who apply direct to the University.
If a student’s application is
accepted, the University will apply to UCAS on his/her behalf.
Application forms
• To apply you will need a 2005
UCAS Application Form and Handbook. These are available in
schools and colleges or, if you are not at school, may be
obtained by writing, after 1 August 2004, to UCAS.
• Your completed application form
must be sent to UCAS with the applicant’s fee of £15. If you
wish to apply for only one course at one institution, a
reduced price of £5 applies.
• You may apply to up to six
institutions on the full-price UCAS form, but you are not
obliged to use all six choices. You should list your choices
in the order in which they appear in the Handbook. Applicants
for medicine, dentistry or veterinary science should list no
more than four such courses in their six choices.
• Although admission at Aberdeen
is to a degree and not to a particular department or subject,
you should still enter your preferred degree programme title
and UCAS code on your UCAS form. However, in most cases it is
easy to change your degree preference after you have begun
your course.
Late applications may be
considered at the discretion of the University. No guarantee
can be made that they will be given the same level of
consideration as applications received by the normal closing
date. UCAS continues to forward applications until 30 June;
candidates whose forms are received after that date will be
sent a clearing entry form, and will be automatically entered
in clearing. With the exceptions of Medicine and Education,
the University of Aberdeen will normally accept applications
after the UCAS closing date.
What
happens next?
You will receive an
acknowledgement letter from the university. Your application
will be considered by one of the Admissions Selectors and a
decision will be made as soon as possible*. You will hear from
UCAS and also from the University. One of four things can
happen:
- You
will be made an unconditional offer if you already have
the qualifications to meet the requirements
- You
will be made a conditional offer if you don’t yet have all
of the necessary passes that the university requires
- You
will be invited for interview - this is part of the normal
selection process for Medicine and Education only
- You
may, if it is obvious from your application that you
cannot meet the requirements, be advised that it could not
make an offer at this stage
After you have received your
offer from the University, you decide whether you wish to
accept it. UCAS send you detailed instructions of when and how
to reply. Hopefully you will make Aberdeen your firm
choice.
*In the case of an application to
the MBChB, a BEd programme or to a BMus programme, the
majority of applicants will be asked to attend an interview.
It is unlikely that any offers will be made until the end of
March of the year of entry to allow for completion of these
interviews.

Admissions
Policy
Every degree has an Admissions
Selector, who considers all the applications for that area of
study. Selectors are most interested in your academic
achievements, but they’ll also take note of the subjects
you’ve studied, and will check for competence in any specific
subjects required. Selectors take your Personal Statement and
your Referee’s Report into account, as well as your actual or
predicted examination grades.
Equal
Opportunities
Applications for admission to all
degree programmes are considered on their academic merit,
without regard to the sex, ethnic origin, or religious or
political affiliation of the applicant. Mature students (21+
at the time they start their course), and students who have
suffered educational hardship or disruption (including
students with disabilities), may receive special
consideration. If you are in one of these categories, you
should tell us on your UCAS form.

Postgraduate
How To
Apply
The
University welcomes all applications, without regard to
the sex, ethnic origin or religious or political
affiliation of the applicant.
When
Do I Apply?
The academic year at Aberdeen
starts about 20 September each year, and most taught
Postgraduate courses begin at that time. Applications can
be made any time in the previous 12 months, preferably at
least 6 months before you start your studies here.
However, applications made later than that will always be
considered if places remain available. Note that there is
no need to complete your previous course of study before
applying; It can make offers conditional upon you
successfully completing a particular qualification.
How Do
I Apply?
Application is made by submitting:
1)
University's Postgraduate
Application Form
2)
Academic transcripts and/or
degree certificate(s) to date
3)
For international applicants,
proof of proficiency in English (e.g. IELTS certificate)
4)
Two references in sealed
envelopes from academic referees or the names and
addresses of two such people. If you can send the
references with your application form, your application
can be processed more quickly.
Note: If you have any
physical or other disability or medical condition which
might necessitate special arrangements or facilities,
please write directly to Student Support Services to
discuss these before you submit your application.
How is
My Application Processed?
1.
When the University has
received all the necessary material, the Head of the
School to which you have applied will decide whether you
can be made an offer of admission. Any offer made will be
either conditional or unconditional. It is quite common
for UK- based applicants for research degrees and
candidates for postgraduate scholarships to be
interviewed. Also interviewed (where possible) are those
that have been out of education for a period of time.
2.
You will be sent an Offer Letter, when you accept the
offer it make you and return the necessary forms, you will
be 'cleared for admission' either immediately (for
unconditional offers) or when you have met the conditions
of the offer to you.
3.
Once you have been 'cleared
for admission' you will be sent, from May onwards, an
Accommodation Booking Form, information regarding Joining
Instructions and (for International students) the
International Students Handbook. |
