The
University has in excess of 2500 bed spaces across a wide
range of accommodation type, and in three main locations:
Hillhead Hall, Crombie Johnston Hall and Elphinstone Road
Flats. Accommodation is either catered or self catering
within single study bedrooms, some within flats others in
traditional halls. A detailed grid of each type of
accommodation and the specification and facilities for it,
is available.

Choosing My Accommodation:
Q: How do I compare the different types of accommodation
available?
A: The grid shows the facilities and prices for all
University accommodation, for more detailed information
about the individual residences.
Q: I am an overseas student coming to Aberdeen to study
medicine. I need accommodation on my own for a few weeks
before my family joins me. Is there suitable accommodation
available?
A: Yes, you can book, the first part of your stay on a
nightly/weekly basis at Hillhead Halls. This can be done
without entering into a contract, leaving you free to make
arrangements for accommodation for your family
Q: Can I view my room before I sign the contract?
A: Yes, if you are able to come to Aberdeen you can
arrange to see University of Aberdeen accommodation by
contacting.
Q: I am only coming to study in Aberdeen for one term.
Can I still apply for University accommodation?
A: Yes, you can apply to live at Hillhead. See section
Visiting and Exchange Students.
Q: I am a Muslim woman and need accommodation in a
female only area. Is this possible?
A: Yes. When you fill in your application form please mark
clearly your requirement for single sex accommodation.
Q: If I really don’t like the accommodation I have
chosen can I move?
A: Yes, you can apply to move into alternative University
Accommodation. You should contact your warden to discuss
your requirements.
Financial Matters:
Q: Do I need to take out insurance for my belongings
whilst I am staying in a Hall of Residence?
A: If you are in University managed accommodation it is
advisable to take out insurance to cover your belongings,
as the University’s policy provides no cover for them. A
wide range of insurance products, designed for students,
is available, so it pays to shop around. If you are in
Aberdeen Student Village accommodation contents insurance
is included in the one off payment made at the start of
your lease.
Q: I am bringing a television with me. Do I need a TV
licence?
A: Yes, you must have a TV licence to cover the television
you bring with you.
Q: Can I pay my rent in installments?
A: For University managed accommodation you can arrange to
pay your fees by Direct Debit. Details of how to arrange
this, and a Direct Debit mandate are included with your
offer of accommodation. For Aberdeen Student Village
accommodation payment is termly in advance.
Q: I want to live in University self-catering
accommodation, but am worried about the bills for heating
and electricity. How much is it likely to cost?
Rent costs for University managed accommodation, and the
utility charge payable for Aberdeen Student Village
accommodation cover the cost of all utilities except for
telephone charges.
Domestic Arrangements
Q: When can I collect my keys?
A: In University managed accommodation you can collect
your keys from 2pm on the date your contract starts from:-

Q: Can I bring my hamster with me?
A: No. Pets are not permitted in any of the Halls of
Residence.
Q: Can I have a guest to stay with me in my room?
A: If you are staying in University managed accommodation
you will find the details for arranging for a guest to
stay in your room in the “Site Information and Services”
booklet that is supplied to you when you move in.
Q: Can I stay in my room over the Christmas, Easter and
Summer holidays?
A: At Hillhead and Elphinstone Rd Flats you can take a
contract which covers the Easter and Christmas vacations.
If you take a contract which doesn’t cover these vacation
periods is very unlikely that you will be able to keep
your room over the vacations, but you can apply to
Hillhead for vacation residence. At Aberdeen Student
Village the vacation periods are covered in the contract.
Welfare:
Q: If I have welfare or financial concerns is there
someone I can turn to?
A: Yes. Student Support Services and the Student
Association both offer advice and support on a large range
of issues
Q: What do I do if I have problems with my flat-mates?
A: You should contact a member of the Wardenial Team to
discuss the problem.
Individual Requirements:
Q: I have a disability and am worried about day to day
life at University. Who can I talk to?
A: The University has a Disabilities Adviser, Dr Lucy
Foley, who can offer advice and support both prior to, and
during your time at University.
Q: I need a special diet for medical reasons, but want
to live in catered accommodation in my first year. Can
special meals be provided?
A: Most special diets can be catered for in traditional
Halls of Residence. If you would like to discuss your
dietary requirements please contact Su Gray at Crombie
