Also on campus is an excellent specialist
Library, a well-furnished student common room with full
kitchen facilities, vending machines, television and couches (postgraduate
students are also welcome to use the staff common room), plus showers and a sick
bay - where Victoria's Student Health Service visit at regularly scheduled
times.
Major items of research equipment available in the Faculty include: a wind
tunnel, heliodon, sky simulator, effulger, beam testing rig and instruments for
field measurements of thermal, lighting, acoustic, ventilation and air quality
conditions.
Undergraduate Laboratories
Most undergraduate courses in Computer Science involve a large amount of
practical work. First-year programming courses in computer science use the Java
virtual machine. Beyond the first year, all Computer Science courses use School
laboratories providing an environment based on networked X-window based personal
workstations, with shared servers running the Unix operating system.
All of the undergraduate courses in Statistics and Operations Research make
some use of statistical and other computer packages such as SYSTAT, SAS and
S-Plus.
Students in some Mathematics courses will make use of the School computer
laboratories, particularly for mathematical packages such as MAPLE and MatLab.
Student editions of the Windows version of these two packages are available
through the Victoria University Book Centre.
All users of computing facilities should be familiar with the University's
Information Systems Statute,
as well as the School's lab rules.
Internet Access
In general, undergraduate students can send and receive email to/from
anywhere in the world, and may access Web sites anywhere in New Zealand.
Graduate students have full world email and Web access.
Casual Employment
From time to time the Library employs, on a casual basis, student assistants
who perform a variety of tasks.
Group Study Rooms
A number of group study rooms are available in the Architecture and Design
Library, Central Library and Commerce Library. Bookings are made for a maximum
of two hours per person or group per day.
To book a room at the Architecture and Design Library or the Central Library,
enquire at the Issue desk. To book a room at the Commerce Library, complete the
form posted on the relevant study room door.
New Material Displays
New material is placed on display for one week, and can be read in the
library.
Recommendations for Purchase
