ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY :
The University of Cumbria was formed on 1st August 2007 formally, from an
amalgamation of St Martin's College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts, and the
Cumbrian campuses of the University of Central Lancashire. The University has
campuses in Carlisle, Newton Rigg, Penrith, Ambleside and Lancaster and a
specialist teacher-education centre in London. The University also has strong
links and close partnership working with the four FE Colleges in Cumbria (Lakes
Colleges, Furness College, Carlisle College and Kendal College) to enable HE
delivery locally across the county. In addition, the University is the lead
institution of Cumbria Higher Learning, a Distributed Learning Network for
Cumbria.
The University offers a very high quality learning experience in a supportive
environment which enables students to achieve their personal and professional
potential wherever they study. It is committed to learning which is innovative,
flexible and student centred and which utilises the latest technology. The
University also works closely with employers, schools, colleges and agencies in
the region to offer research, scholarship and knowledge transfer excellence
which shapes and supports social, cultural and economic development in support
of the inclusion sustainable communities agenda. In so doing, the University of
Cumbria recognises that its students are a mix of full and part-time, young and
mature, vocational and scholastic, who access HE for a variety of reasons, yet
it celebrates that its graduates will be creative, enterprising and resourceful
and equipped to lead in their fields and in their communities.
VISION :
Working closely with its partners and stakeholders, the University of Cumbria is
committed to providing an outstanding student experience, and to bringing the
transformational and opportunity-giving qualities of Higher Education to all who

and knowledge, in a supportive learning environment, which will equip them for
success and fulfilment throughout their lives wherever they live and work.

Fully committed to inclusivity and accessibility, the University of Cumbria will
reflect the Christian values and the creative traditions on which it was
founded, and will promote an environment where diversity is celebrated and

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS :
They are delighted that you are thinking about coming to study in England and
that you are considering following a course at the University of Cumbria.
Universities and Colleges in the United Kingdom enjoy a worldwide reputation for
the high quality of their courses, as well as being friendly and welcoming.
Here at the University of Cumbria you will be able to study in one of the most
beautiful parts of the country in an institution which has been welcoming
international students through its doors for many years. Cumbria famously
contains the Lake District National Park as well as historical treasures like
Hadrian's Wall, which was built by the Romans and is now internationally
recognised as a World Heritage Site.
The University of Cumbria is a multi-campus institution based in the North West
of England, with excellent and speedy communication links to Manchester, London,
Scotland and Ireland. The University has around 15,000 students, full and
part-time, based on its campuses in Carlisle, Lancaster, Penrith, Ambleside and
London, following a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree
programmes. Their students come from all parts of the UK, from other countries
in the European Union and from many other parts of the world.
The University has many international links and values them highly. They have
collaborative partnerships with numerous universities and colleges throughout
the world, and they have considerable experience in meeting the particular
academic needs of full-time international students. In addition, they can
offer places for both full-year and part-year study abroad students at all of
their campuses.
They hope you will find a course at the University of Cumbria which will suit
your own particular needs. What you will also find at the University is a
wonderful student experience - being part of a lively and friendly student body
which knows how to both work and play hard!
UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES :
STUDENT ACCOMMODATION :
Helping you find the perfect home from home.
Most first year students opt to stay in halls of residence. With almost 1200
rooms available across their campuses, you have an excellent chance of obtaining
a place provided you apply before mid August in the year your course starts. To
facilitate your studies they are currently planning to make internet access
available from every halls bedroom. Most students have their own study bedroom
(some rooms in Ambleside are twins) and share a kitchen, lounge and
bathroom. Many are en-suite and a member of the residential life team is on hand
to help.
Living off-campus
Most students live off campus after the first year, and some new students prefer
to do so from the start. There is a good choice of reasonably priced homes
around their campuses. They only advertise or lease properties that have been
accredited by the council and inspected to ensure they meet statutory safety
regulations. Their accommodation officers will help you find a home. They will
also invite you to their house hunting help days, where you can meet other
students, receive guidance from a buddy (a second or third-year student), view
accommodation and question prospective landlords.
