The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has a truly international focus. Their Preston campus is a modern
green oasis in the heart of England's newest city. It is home to students and
staff from many different social and ethnic backgrounds across the UK, and from
almost every country in the world.
Most of the university buildings are within a ten
minute walk of each other and there are fantastic new facilities for the
Business, Health and Science Faculties, along with cutting edge study
environments in technology, arts and humanities. Campus developments continue to
go from strength to strength.
To help you find your way around there's a student
information centre called The 'i' situated in the centre of the Campus and is
the first port of call for help and advice on most subjects - from accommodation
to careers to council tax.
If you want to take a break from your studies, there
are lots of ways to enjoy yourself. The Students' Union is at the heart of
student life on campus and our new £6.5 million building boasts some of the best
facilities in the country, including retail and catering outlets, a print shop
and our very own radio station and magazine.
In 2005 the new entertainments venue, 53° was voted
Students' Union of the Year by the British Entertainments and Disco Association
(BEDA). There are also several other restaurants and coffee shops on campus.
Clubs and societies
There are over sixty clubs and societies which will
help you to make friends from the UK and around the world, perhaps continuing an
existing interest, or trying something completely new.
The international society allows students to
experience different cultures and nationalities and organises low-priced day
trips to UK destinations and weekend trips to Europe at very reasonable prices.
You can try also your hand at a number of sports,
from snowboarding to horse riding, and even if you're not in a sports club, you
can take advantage of the university's sports facilities. Sport and recreation
are a major part of student life and we have first rate facilities both on
campus and on our doorstep.
Foster Sports Centre in the centre of the campus was
recently extended and refurbished to provide a full range of activities for
health and fitness and indoor sport. Outdoor sports can be enjoyed at Preston's
magnificent £12million Sports Arena which can compete with the best in the
northwest, offering facilities for team sports, racket sports, outdoor pursuits,
fitness and athletics.
Studying at UCLan
With around 30,000 students studying at Preston,
UCLan is now the sixth largest university in the UK. It is ranked in the
leading third of the UK's modern universities and is the leading modern
university in the North West of England
During the last ten years the University has spent
over £77million in providing a modern, state of the art learning environment,
including campus-wide free internet access via an extensive computer network,
and a new library open seven days a week.
Housed in a modern four-storey building, the
library is well stocked with books, journals, reference texts and online
resources. Major international newspapers are also available.
It has the largest computer access area in the
University, with around 240 networked terminals, providing students with their
own:
The library also has quiet areas and bookable
meeting rooms, ideal for group seminars, equipped with overhead projectors,
whiteboards and flipcharts.
The specialised learning resources unit also offers
a computerised Braille translation service which supports the Mission to
remove barriers to those with special needs.
